Photographer’s Note

Junks are efficient and sturdy ships of great proportions that traveled across oceans as early as the 2nd century AD. The design is a tradition of China and has endured throughout its history.

This one is the latest navigating in the bay of Hong Kong and has been conceived, designed and painstakingly hand built over a period of 18 months in the shipyard of an 80 year old master craftsman, supervised by an equally experienced 73 year old ship-building veteran, using traditional chinese boat building methods which have now all but died out in Hong Kong.

Jolie jonque. C'est toujours interessant de voir à Hong Kong le contraste avec la ville ultramoderne derrière. Les couleurs sont belles.
Ton couple 5D / 70 200 n'est pas trop lourd en voyage ?

Hi Andre,
I like how the bright red sails stand out from the cold muted colours in the rest of the image. Apart from the sails and the bottom of the junk, this is almost a monochrome image.
I think shooting in portrait format has worked well, especially as it's allowed you to include the V-shape formation of birds in the top right corner. A good touch.

Cool shot Andre! I like these old traditional Hong Kong ships and you portrayed in a very beautiful form. The city skyline in the back contrasts well with the ancient feel of the scene. Great is also the string of birds in the top right! Have yourself a Holy Easter if you happen to celebrate It.

Le passage dans le coin en haut à droite des oiseaux qui va dans le même sens que le bateau ajoute un bonne touche supplémentaire à cette composition. Le rouge des voiles ressort très bien.

Le rouge des voiles qui tranche sur le bleu du ciel et, en prime, ce vol d'oiseaux en V en haut de l'image, deux bonnes raisons d'apprécier cette photo. Beau bâteau traditionnel en plus.

Hi Andre!
You have a wonderful gallery and it was really hard for me to decide on any of them. This is the most recent and why not critique on it?
Wonderful colors of the sails make this one a splendid photo, and f/2.8 is a quite interesting f value for this much light. It could happen out to become a nice pirate ship or a scene form a movie, but the Hong Kong skyline at the BG adds daily life feeling and fits greatly into the atmosphere of its city. Excellent share!

Alors là André, je me suis retrouvée aux prises avec un mystère... Il m'a fallu aller lire pour comprendre. C'est dans de tels moments que je vois que mon anglais est encore largement déficient. En fait, je ne savais trop si tu étais ironique ou quoi dans ton titre et ta note. N'étant pas femme à abandonner une question si rapidement quand elle en rencontre une (!), je me suis plongée dans une lecture très intéressante. "Junk" a plus d'un sens! Je connaissais son sens de "camelote, pacotille, cochonnerie, etc.", mais pas du tout qu'il était la traduction de "jonque". En fait, j'ai même découvert que l'un découlait de l'autre! Pour ne pas alourdir encore plus ma critique (?), je te suggère de lire la section "Word history" pour ce mot dans mon toujours secourable answers.com (junk).
Quant à la photo, ces voiles sont vraiment du plus bel effet. ROUGE! J'aime le rouge. Et ça me semble une très belle jonque, en effet. Surtout quand on s'appelle "Aqualuna"!!! ;) Je ne comprends pas trop ton choix d'ouverture, par contre. J'aurais eu tendance à fermer plus et à monter le ISO (d'autant plus que le 5D (bave d'envie) est reconnu pour sa capacité à bien gérer les hautes valeurs de ISO).
Ah, la beauté du bois et du travail bien fait d'artisans amoureux de leur art! Ça vaut aussi pour le photographe de cette photo... ;)

ce rouge extrêmement lumineux attire le regard, c'est extraordinaire. En echo le tee-shirt du passager prolonge ce plaisir.

Quel anachronisme ! Une antiquité flottante devant une ville du 21e siècle. Bien contrasté (voile rouge vs arrière-plan). Je ne savais pas que le mot "jonque" était "junk" en anglais. Alors, mieux vaut faire attention lorsqu'on parle de "junk" en Chine.

This is a typical sample of a perverted photo, which has only one purpose for existence…
Playing upon our natural senses of beauty.
Dishonest way of presenting the photo with such captivating red colors, matching perfectly the rest of the elements - -that we have no choice left, but simply being conquered by the charm of it.
Most of the photographers on TE actually abandoned this dishonest way of making the pictures so seductively, for not to cause any stress upon the viewers.
Andre…Please…Take it into consideration of what I just wrote, and stop fooling around with our preceptors, OK?

Une fabuleuse lumière sur se bateau me fait penser un peu à un bateau fantôme. Son architecture est réellement particulière. Il semble en parfait état malgré son age. Le format vertical sied particulièrement. L'arrière plan constitué de grattes-ciel est affecter d'un bokeh léger et juste comme il le faut pour qu'il se fasse discret.

Hi Andre. What a perfect 'classic' photograph of a tradiitonal HK junk - it reminds me of the oil paintings that you see in many of the tourist shops in the alleyways of Tsim Sha Tsui. I can't add much to all the accolades that you have received above, but I wonder why you uploaded this at such a low quality. You used less than half of your 200kb TE allowance, and unfortunately that introduced just a tiny bit of pixelation into the sky. If you'd uploaded at a higher quality, I am sure that wouldn't have been there. Cheers . . . David

When looking at this image what strikes me immediately is the wonderful light on the sails. I also like the matching bright red throughout the shot (on the sails, on the mans jacket, and on the building in the background). Well composed and I like the flock of birds in the corner, Well seen!

The junk itself is beautiful, but you're able to make it even more so.
More on the junk:
This is the Aqua Luna, the last junk in Hong Kong. You can book a seat on it, or if you go for dinner at the Aqua Restaurant in Tsim Sha Tsui, you can get a ride. (advance booking would be advised!)
