(NB : a friend helped me to improve this scan from the photo of a slide ; it is still grainy (should change of scanning machine...); but he successfully restored the original colours, as the print was not good - that day was very hazy with a blinding light. The 1st photo can be seen in the workshop).

Description of the scene : in the old livestock market of Kashgar (extreme west China, an area called « east Turkestan » by the Uyghurs living there, « Xinjiang » by the Chinese), which used to be directly in the outskirts of that great city, a man demonstrates the quality of a horse for sale, galloping over a very short distance down a narrow path between a crowd of onlookers.

You can also see other animals for sale, a Bactrian camel, goats and sheeps etc here, a photo taken a few metres away.

Since then, the market has been relocated far away from the city ; more practical and much larger, but not as colourful and atmospherical.
*************************************

A personal and a bit emotional note : I returned 3 different years to the Chinese Turkestan ; already the first time, with a group of Dutch people in 1996, I found magical to be able to communicate a little bit with the Uyghurs (speaking a Turkic language) who live so far away from Turkey, and felt so much empathy with them.

3 years later, I took there some lessons of the language with unemployed persons, and listened to their personal stories ; the 3rd time was while travelling with a friend overland between Kyrgyzstan and Nepal (also via Tibet) in 2002, when saw so shocking changes, that I am not sure that I'll ever have the courage to return there.

If the plight of the Tibetan people is well publicized thanks amongst others to some Hollywood stars, the Uyghurs don't have a Dalai Lama to champion their cause and due to the fact that they are Muslims, any rebellion there is branded as "Islamist terrorism", rather than an attempt to get a bit more freedom and have more say in the running of their own area, now that all the neighbouring states (Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and a bit farther, Uzbekistan etc) have gained their independance from the ex USSR.

In short, among others : ever increasing numbers of sponsored Han Chinese are coming to colonize that corner of China, preference is always given to them when it comes to jobs, the schooling system is being changed, the culture is being erradicated, the architecture treasures (apart from some landmarks, often transformed into kitch Disneyland with artificial lawns around etc) are being damaged or demolished :

For instance, beautiful, venerable old cities on the silk road, being traversed in their very heart by large new boulevards with uggly, soulless, cheap quality and uniform skyscrapers, ... dividing the middle of old bazaars and neighbourhoods ; Urumqi, the capital of the area, is now more than 90% ethnic Chinese and almost all the old buildings have been erased ; demolition has been completed there.

Yes, China is bringing "development" to that area, which is rich in mineral resources (among others, oil), but to what costs, and who gains from it ???

Maybe more impressions in next posts, I don't want to get into troubles, but really, believe me : I am not exaggerating, what's happening there is as sad as what's going on in Tibet, and the world does not know about it.

Hey Catherine,
This shot helps to show the diversity of China. I like to see this, being reminded that China is more than the big cities, is more than the Han Chinese. Their culture is diverse, and unfortunately they don't realize how diverse it is .

Bonjour Catherine,

Hi Cath.

Wonderfull..an action so well captured in frame..The power of the galloping is very clear as well as the spectators curious looks.

Dear Catherine,
A story everywhere, in the picture as well as in the note.
Perfect combination of a picture with a note. May be I was waiting the horse to move!!!!!!!!!!!

A powerful mental effect.

Best wishes.

Hi Cath
Love to see your 'off the beaten track' photos. Truly inspiring. Coaxed out quite some details from the scan. The diversity of China as a country (as in the case of my country) is well illustrated here. Great timing for this shot.
Regards
Angshu

Your pictures are a valuable documentary of life in Asia. The quality is good. I agree about Tibet, the world is a mute spectator. So much about unipolar world:)

Salut Catherine,

Hi Cath,

A beautiful dynamic post from you! the galloping horse is really beautifully captured. the scan is though not o high quality, but that really does not matter that much. Also, your note is very effective. Many of the things are personally known to me, because I have a Uyghur friend and I know a little bit of the difficulties and the problems in this part of China.

regards

sayan

Bonjour Catherine!

Pierre

Hi Cath, beautiful image full of the atmosphere of this moment..
it seems an image from the past..
i like your compo here!
bravo!
ciao!
