C'mon Baby, Smile for Mommy
 |
|
| [Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe |
China's growing middle class has more leisure time and discretionary income these days, so they take their cameras and their kids and go touring. We ran into this mother and daughter in the Forbidden City, with Mom trying to persuade daughter to look at her and make a nice picture. Baby seemed more interested in us, the strange Quai Lo (Foreign Ghosts).
Technical: Scanned from a 4x6 print, then Noiseware to sharpen the image. I used Curves to make some color adjustments, and Shadow/Highlights to soften the midtones. |

Hi Daniel
I love taking candids and this one is a gem. The gray masonry makes a good background. Its interesting but not so dominant as to compete with your subjects.
You have placed the mother prominently in the your frame making her your centre of interest, but I see things in a different way.
Personally, I would want to place the child more prominently in the picture. It's a difficult choice to make because they both have interesting expression and poses, but I know what my choice would be.
I have done a workshop and I'll leave it up to you to decide which version you prefer.

Love this one :-)
Besides the entertaining content, I also really like the "artistic" merrits of this image. Not only does the kid stand out by its colored outfit, everything else in the picture also leads the eye to the kid:
- the diagonals of the building meet where the kid sits
- the arched body of the mother, helped by the reaching hand, also ends there.
Simply perfect!
ps: Due to this I prefer your wider framing over tsti003's workshop.
Hi Daniel,
funny scene that you captured here...thanks also for your useful note.
Cheers Christian

This scene is always couldbe seen in most tourist area.
Parents always want their kids to smile before the camera.
It reminds me of the world of kids.
TFS.
