Photographer's Note

Here we are in world’s largest public square, and it truly is vast. Tiananmen Square can been described as many things – the symbolic centre of the Chinese universe; an epitaph to China’s democracy movement; a huge public park where couples stroll hand in hand and children play, flying kites.

This chap was standing some way behind a fence, so in this shot you do not quite get the impression of the mass of people milling around. Behind is the Gate of Heavenly Peace, with the familiar portrait of Mao, beyond which lies the Forbidden City. I wandered around the square and just watched people going about their daily life. I was fascinated and at the same time bewildered by the scale of the place, its paradoxical calm and bustle, its warmth and yet its feeling of alien hostility.
