Photographer’s Note
Located at the foot of Wuzhou Mountain some 16 km west of Datong City, Shanxi Province, Yungang Grottoes were built against the mountain and extend about 1 km from east to west. The construction of the caves started 453 AC under the auspices of a monk named Tan Yao and took 50 years to complete. Many additions were made in the following centuries.
The site consists in 53 grottoes, that contain some 1,000 niches with about 51,000 statues of Buddha with sizes ranging from the smallest, only 2 centimeters high, to the tallest – a 17-meters high Buddha, which you can see on the picture.
The quality of the statues, whose style is inspired by the greek and indian cultures, as well as the size of the site make it one of the most remarkable grottoes in Asia.

Bonjour Yannick,
