While I have often taken pictures of the sun behind clouds, this was my first time when I got the SUN BEHIND WAVES. To do this,I had to consciously catch the early morning (rising) sun to get the lowest possible angle. However, not all beaches have the requisite slope towards the water, or sometimes the waves are not too big.
Gopalpur-on-Sea (Orissa, India) offered a perfect combination. It is one of the eastern-most beaches in India, with the sun rising very low over the horizon. The beach slopes steeply into the sea, and the waves are proper breakers, averaging 5-6 ft during early morning.
The resulting shot looked like the sun behind dark clouds, which in reality is the breaking surf. Truly, waves washing in a new dawn!
It was a challenge toggling between different modes to catch the best possible colour/saturation, I finally took this picture using the "Sunset" mode pre-setting on my Fuji Finepix S8000FD. I kept two-thirds reserved for the sky becasue of the brilliant clouds, and also since it was no point keeping focus on the beach/waves when they were too dark (It was around 4.45AM). |
