Nohkalikai waterfall, Cherrapunji, Meghalaya

This is what legend say about this water fall

NohkaLikai (Khasi language for “The plunge of Likai” falls)

There was a young widow named Likai with a toddler. She was a very hardworking lady. Due to her young widow status.. she would often get marriage proposals. On the insistence of the village elders she got married to a guy from her village. Right after the marriage, trouble started .. her new husband lost his job.. took to drinking and started making life hell for her and her young daughter.

One day the husband murdered her daughter and while she was away at the fields, cooked the flesh and by deceit made her eat her own daughter. Once she came to know of it.. she became wild with with disgust, anger and remorse.. She took an axe and followed by the other villagers she went in search of his husband. Come evening.. she had still not found him and exhausted and almost mad at the way life turned out for her.. she jumped from the top of this waterfall and plunged to her death

Hence to this day.. villagers call this waterfall as ‘Noh ka likai’ or ‘The plunge of Likai Falls’

hi nabarun

very well shot. generally people focus ony on the falls. but you have captured the whole setting - which make this photograph beuatiful. but is the clour of the sky natural? its difficult to get clear sky in the monsoons.

regards
somak

Never thought that there's such a sad story behind this extraordinary falls!! You said a very touching story...but I should say that this is an equally fascinating shot as the previous one!!! The openness in the frame looks wonderful..so does the surrounding greenery.
Regards,
Sagarneel.

Hello Nabarun,

Looking to the size of the trees on your photo, we can guess the huge size of the water fall.
I appreciate also the use of the curve of the cliff to drive the look from the foreground to the background.
A well built photo,

Yves.

Sad story,beautiful view............
thanks for sharing
