Photographer's Note

Hathi Parvat towering over Loniakhal Dhar in Garhwal, Uttarakhand.

The Hathi Parvat massif is a prominent peak in the Badrinath region, its summit rising 6727m above sea level. The name means "Elephant Mountain" - referring to its similarity to the figure of an elephant seen in profile.

The meadow in the foreground is 4000m in elevation, about the same height as the ridge from which I took the photograph. The bright yellow regions on the grass are wildflowers that carpet these high grass slopes in June. The ridge rises 100m left of this illuminated spur to a wider flat meadow known to locals as Loniakhal; beyond that, the ridge continues to a series of 5000m minor peaks that form the Kalpaganga-Alakananda watershed.
