The dictionary meaning of the term Confluence is ‘meeting point of two rivers’. Here, in the twilight hours, Har-ki-Pauri seemed to become the confluence of the holy River Ganga and the rising river of humanity as it swelled by the minute in this sacred ghat.

Haridwar, literally means 'The gateway to the Gods'. It's the place where the river where the river Ganga spreads over the northern plains of India. Situated on the right side of the bank of the holy Ganga, it is a Gateway to the four pilgrimage of Uttarakhand. Haridwar is variously mentioned as Mayapuri, Gangadwar, Mokhsadwar in the ancient Hindu scriptures and epics. A major Shaktipeeth from time immemorial, the place is believed to have both sanctified by the powerful trinity of Hindu mythology - Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. This is why the place has been a ever-refreshing mystic venue for the purification of the mind, body and soul. The Kumbha Mela, happening once every 12 years and the Ardha Kumbha Mela (happening once every six years) are big draws.

This picture is from the holy ghat (a wide set of steps descending to a river, esp. a river used for bathing ) of Har-ki-Pauri (literally means Lord Hari or Vishnu’s footprint). Legend has it that King Vikramaditya constructed this sacred ghat around 1st century B.C., in memory of his brother Bhatrihari who it is believed had come to Haridwar to meditate on the banks of the Ganga. This ghat later came to be known as Har-Ki-Pauri (also called Brahamakund). At twilight, golden hues of floral diyas reflected in the river Ganga present the most enchanting sight. The imprint of Lord Vishnu’s footprint hallows the riverbank temple here. The ghat is regarded the most sacred and auspicious point to bathe in the Ganga during the Kumbh held after 12 years and Ardh Kumbh after 6 years.

Shot of one of the most sacred places in the world. I love the shot, full of emotions and not people, as people don't come here, here comes the emotions, here comes the devotion, for Mother Ganges.
I salute yu dear Angshu for such a splendid view.
The very presence of the shot on the PC fills my heart with joy and makes my mind drift to the feet of Mother Ganges.
Don't know how may times my bones were immeresed in thy sacred waters and how many times the nears and dears would cary my ashes here........but I love the place.
Thank you brother for this.....
Love and regard,

Rajeev

Excellent POV. All the perspective lines lead into the scene. It's an amazing sight that so many people gather for a Holy occasion. Do they all wait their turn to go into the Ganga?

Hello Angshu!
I´ve heard of the Kumbha Mela before, but I´ve never seen a picture of it on TrekEarth. But I think it must be really amazing to stand among those many many people. This shot is great, it really shows the festival how it really is. You composed the picture perfectly and you chose an excellent point of view.
Thanks a lot for sharing this wonderful photo with us! Best regards,
Jonas

Angshu, your images are not only shots that can like more or less, they are authentic witnesses of your country's day by day. This one, for instance, could appear in the frontpage of any newspaper. You're a graphical crooner of your country, my friend.

Best regards

Wow, must be really amazing. I wish I could see that for real.
This looks so typical to me, so india, so crazy, so impressive !!!
A great report shot.
Stéphane

Nice title which reveal immediatly the name of the river. It is very impressing to see how many people on this picture, but holy places seems to be perfect to attract huge crowds of people, (even more than music concerts...). Not the best of the skies, but this time the intesrest is down rather than up.

All the best,

Emmanuel

What a lovely immage of this scared place. Interesting place and scene. Fine colours and composition. Well done.
Best wishes,
Achim

Ola Angshuman ,
Nossa quanta gente neste lugar fantástico conhecido no mundo ,todas estas pessoas para tomar banho no rio um lugar de fé , gostei muito das cores , belo ponto de visão , parabéns!!!
Um abraço Gonçalo

Hi Angshuman,
So this one is from your new camera ... you've got a good quality wide angle lens. You've captured this spectacular scene well .... the sheer number of people is just fascinating to watch. Well composed and your description is interesting and informative to read. Good balanced lighting and contrast. Well done! tfs
Cheers,
Renier

Taken two days after I did 40 ;-) Olá Angshu, I remember well this place and its fascinating mood. The weather seems the same but the crowd is much bigger. And I thought there was a lot of people when I was there...but not like this. It's fantastic this vison...much more interesting than the crowds in football stadiums. Great diagonal of the river flowing around the redish 'cupulas'. A pitty the not perfect light conditions and these lamps of the lamppost in FG.
Best regards,
ricardo

Hallo Angshu my friend,
an impressive image here, a nice piece of photogiournalism with a bonus from the rainy day atmosphere, fine work, I like it!!!

have a nice week,
Fabio.

Hi Angshuman,

The presence of people has an effect of scale. The point of view of the Ganaga river is giving depth to the picture. The curve of the river is an asset to the composition. The cloudy sky is filtering the light which is giving a good contrast to the colors. Your note is informative. Have a nice day.

hello angshuman

an interesting observation here. the crowds do resemble the river itself... so, the title is perfect here. not sure i personally would want to fight my way through this crowd ever, but the atmosphere does seem magic.

warm regards,
kristaps

Hi Angshuman, great place - great photo! So many people, so famous place and ceremony! Congratulation for this photo with this POV.

hello Angshuman,
you did not have a particularly nice and interesting light here, but such a scene is fascinating in any light. I like a lot your comparison of two rivers, especially seeing how the crowd mirrors the curves of the river the little islands in the middle. the point of view you have chosen creates a very nice composition with the river leadind the eye through the scene, I like that a lot. excellent work, and very informative note, thank you for that.

regards,
Kristine

Hello Angshuman,
These traditions and beliefs doesn't stop to amaze me and this shot of yours just enhance the feeling.
It's really something to watch this scene specially when mixed with those beautiful buildings.
I like a lot this shot!
Cheers.
Paulo

Impressive moment youve captured here! I love the frame of people, and the composition of the river is perfectly done.
Good shot,

Hi Angshu,
Some big crowds there...and you found a good high POV on the holy place. The overcast sky gave you intense contrasted colors. Neddless to say: many details to look at!!!
Greetings

Hi Angshuman

A superb daily life scene with good sharpness & high pov. A popular spot too, by the look of it. Tfs!

Hi Angshuman,
A great capture of this sacred place, the multitude is impressive! We can notice an almost mystical feeling in this ritual bath, your composition has a lot of spiritual strength.
The depth of the image is fantastic, and the architectural elements that appear between the people add a special interest to the photo.
Nice work, my friend.
Best regards,
Josep
