In the twilight hours, Har-ki-Pauri in Haridwar, seemed to become the confluence of the holy River Ganga and the rising river of humanity as it swelled by the minute in this sacred ghat.

Haridwar, literally means 'The gateway to the Gods'. It's the place where the river where the river Ganga spreads over the northern plains of India. Situated on the right side of the bank of the holy Ganga, it is a Gateway to the four pilgrimage of Uttarakhand. Haridwar is variously mentioned as Mayapuri, Gangadwar, Mokhsadwar in the ancient Hindu scriptures and epics. A major Shaktipeeth from time immemorial, the place is believed to have both sanctified by the powerful trinity of Hindu mythology - Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. This is why the place has been a ever-refreshing mystic venue for the purification of the mind, body and soul. The Kumbha Mela, happening once every 12 years and the Ardha Kumbha Mela (happening once every six years) are big draws.

This picture is from the holy ghat (a wide set of steps descending to a river, esp. a river used for bathing ) of Har-ki-Pauri (literally means Lord Hari or Vishnu’s footprint). Legend has it that King Vikramaditya constructed this sacred ghat around 1st century B.C., in memory of his brother Bhatrihari who it is believed had come to Haridwar to meditate on the banks of the Ganga. This ghat later came to be known as Har-Ki-Pauri (also called Brahamakund). The ghat is regarded the most sacred and auspicious point to bathe in the Ganga.

But there’s no holding back some young lads combining thrill with purification, as they jump from the low bridges onto the swirling & speeding water of the River Ganga. And that’s not the end, the water is cold, as the guys did a routine of jumping, coming up shivering, climbing the railing of the bridge & jumping again.

I had posted a B&W version in the Workshop . Which one would you prefer?

Namaste Angshuman

A good decisive moment, catching the jumping boy mid flight, from a superb high vantage point. Good colour & sharpness. Tfs!

Hello Angshu,
This sure is the shot of the day for me. I like the way he has been freezed by you!!!! The B&W version appeals more to me, may be bcoz my eyes get less distraction on the ghats.

Well done sir.

Cher Angshu,
Encore une photo très réussie. Nous avons l'impression d'être sur place et d'assister aux différents sauts.
La photo couleur semble meilleure car reproduisant plus de détails.
Merci pour ces informations.

Hallo Angshu,
Your River of Humanity, The Shadows Waiting, and Like a Tentacle into the Blue City is all so different and yet the feeling of peace is with all of them like a thumbprint.
I went through your photographs as with the rest of my friends that I did not have contact with for so long also as always find them incredible.
To read your notes I can never go to India and say that I do not know it. Because of your notes, India became more real to me, thanks for allowing me to see and understand.

Dear Angshu,
Great impression with spectacular composition and excellent timing. This is a superb theme with effective and original realization. Very well done! Have a nice weekend

Hello Angshu.
Cette photo est bien composée avec ce plongeur en pleine action. La version désaturée est, elle aussi, très plaisante à voir.
Beau travail !
Jacques

Hi Angshuman,

The point of view has captured well the jump of the young man into the Ganga river. The presence of the people in the water and on the edge has an effect of scale. Your note is informative. The light is giving a good contrast to the colors. Have a nice day.

Pierre

PS:I prefer the color photo

Salut
L'angle est génial.. On dirait qu'il va se faire un plat.. :)
Bien vu
Cyril

Hi Angshu - thanks to your posts of this place, I've already added it to my list of possible future destinations... this one is a good compo with that triangle of daily life in the corner, and the impressive jumper bringing the action and filling the water space... regards, Daniel

good freesing moment, very nice depth fine shot I like it, good photojob, have a good weekend.

Next time I visit Haridwar, I make point to shoot the jumping boys.
Ha ha ha!!
Of course the mere sight of the Mother Ganges purifies the mind.
Sure its the colours which matter the most.

Rajeev

Hi Angshuman,
Great capture of the dynamism of this scene in the Ganges river. The boy jumping from the bridge is perfectly "frozen" in his jump, and we can notice that there is a considerable height.
The diagonal in the setting with the people and the environment of the sacred bath is very interesting graphically, and has a great life, especially thanks to the color, and for this reason I prefer this version more than that of the WS in B/W.
Best regards,
Josep

Hi Angshu,
The POV and sense of "frozen motion" is impressive. You captured the jump on the exact moemnt and were able to place the boy in a good position compo wise. I like also how the image "tells us" about the grey water and the crowd that gathers to make their ritual baths.
The B&W version is also very effective, but I like to see the colours of people here.
Regards, José.

Hi Angshu,
I think this guy is attempting suicide! ( i saw dozens of people drown in Goa, so I am always worried if i see Indian people swimming in dificult waters ).... Most probably mother Ganga is more friendky to the pilgrims than the Arabian sea to half drunk tourists, mind you!
The framing here is very good with the corner showing the crowded Ghats, and the rest only Ganga. Good timing to capture the man at the right place. The subdued colors fit monsoon season.
As i am a color freak, i prefer this one.
Greetings
Laurent

Hello Angshuman! Love your title :) and sometimes people do it in Zurich and jump off the bridge to land in the Limmat and have the attention of many tourists, or me, but I am always a little scared to watch them as the water is as cold as you describe it and the current is heavy enough so you need to be a decent swimmer. I find the color version better somehow and transports the India feeling that I expect but I cannot really describe it. I really like the action part but also that you can see the people standing on the other side coming out of the water or going in for their holy baths. Impressive photo. Best regards ... Barbara.

hi angshu,

a well captured moment and a great note. i have a few of these type from Hrishikesh - at the ghats near ram jhula. these guys really enjoy themselves.

regards
somak

Hello Angshuman,

The decisive moment very well collected with a good timing. We have impression to jump with the young man. I like too the composition with the another people on the side.
Very impressive and very interesting.
Have a good day,
Roger

Hello Angshu, very attractive photo no doubt!

I like the nuances of ation that you have captured and the very nature of this jump itself where the person seems to be airbourne. Nice capture.

Fantastic view over that dozens of people celebrationg this ceremony. Spectacular view, so well captured. This is a great shot!
The B&W enhance the contrast, but I'm a favourite of coloured pictures.
Best wishes,
Achim

Both versions i like Angshu but i prefer this colours version. Perfect moment to capture the jumping man, the ganga river reminded my childhood memories at Sumatra island, which similiar kind of river, the river's name is Batanghari, its spread along the Malaka strait. At the same time its a very informative note, thank you...

Hello Angshu,

With the high temperatures in your country can everyone take a header in the river, as this are very healty this is the question.
Very well picture, perhaps have to you try for a panning picture to take, alone the diver sharp and the rest blur.
Very well done, TFS.

Best regards,
John.

A very fine capture of a dynamic moment Dear Angshu! I prefer the colored version as there are many colors on the people's outfits, which is so characteristic of your beautiful country. The point of view here is my favorite part of the shot. Thanks for sharing.

Cool shot. IO like the perspective and the INDIAN Atmosphere. Very nice, Nino.

Hi Angshu,
great capture with perfect timing, from a very well chosen pov. I like the diagonal obtained with the riverbank, dividing the photo in two well contrasting parts. Sincerely, it is hard to decide, which version is more suitable, but maybe this time the b/w works a bit better. Well done, my friend!
Tfs and best wishes.

Hello Angshuman!
The point of view is very nice and your timing capturing the boy on air was perfect. Well taken! I usually prefer colour shots, but here the b&w for me is better, since the colours are not really great on this version due to the large portion of water in grey colour.
Regards,
Zeca

Fantastic jump shot - I like that it looks like youre also jumpign with him, right behind!
Amazing angle!

Hi Angshuman!
Very well composed! You took it on the best moment, when the man was jumping. Good idea to include some people on the corner, it works better that way. This time I'm not really sure about which one I prefer but I guess it's the b&w.

Ola amigo ,
Fantástica foto deste homem em pleno ar a cair sobre a agua gostei muito da sensação de movimento , interessante a cor da agua , parabéns!!

Hello my friend Angshuman.
I'm very happy to hear from you.
This picture is much interesting by its studied depth provided by the view of near diver opposed to that of distant bathers...and the graphic design located at upper left is quite informative of the event.
Best regards from Canada.
Robert

Hi Angshuman!

You are a good photographer Angshu and it shows here again. A great point of view to feel the height and the people on the gat and a perfect exposure to freeze the jumper.

Cheers!

Hi Angshu,
Nice action shot; this is one of the very few cases where I prefer the B&W because it removes the distraction of the flat colors. and somehow, it looks a bit sharper
