[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
Morning at around 6.30, we embarked on a 218 Km journey from Rishikesh, our destination being a small hamlet called Harsil.

The road from Rishikesh to Uttarkashi was good, though we had low monsoon clouds throughout our journey. The beauty of the mountainous landscape in the mist & low clouds has a different dimension altogether. The road from Uttarkashi to Harsil (73 Km) is an imposing one, surrounded as it is by high rocky mountains and the Bhagirathi (or Ganges) river that flows alongside the road. There are plenty of blind corners here too and the roads are at times very slippery due to rain. Add to that a mega dam project underway & a 20 Km odd stretch was a driving nightmare with the road becoming nothing more than slippery mud. Landslides are common in this stretch during this season (also attributed to the blasting done for the dam construction) & we were forced to stop for an hour due to a landslide, which blocked the road. Pine forests abound in the area and pine needles lying on the road can prove very dangerous and the car could skid under sharp braking.

Situated at a height of 7,860 ft. (2,620 mtrs.) from sea level, Harsil’s beauty is yet unexplored by the enthusiasts’ travelers. Harsil is a cantonment area. Apart from being at the way to Gangtori (the origin of River Ganges), it is also the entry point to the Kinnaur Himalayas in Himachal Pradesh. It is surrounded by the breathtaking splendour of the majestic Himalayan peaks. This place is also known as a major apple growing zone. It has a cool climate throughout and gets snow bound between December to March. However, not many people know or visit this place. Harsil is more used as an overnight stopover enroute to Gangotri. A pity, since this small place is really beautiful!

A group of Tibetans settled in Harsil in the late 1950s, the same time when Dalai Lama escaped from Tibet to India. Mostly shepherds, these Tibetans rear mountain goats & sheep, make wool from them & then make handmade woolen garments for selling in the plains. I took this picture as I was entering the Tibetan village. He seemed curious & understandably so...there aren’t too many tourists around in Harsil. I soon made friends with this curious onlooker.

Thought of further cropping the picture, with just the boy. But I wanted to show, in this photograph, his house & living conditions as well. His portrait would be for later...:-)

Hi Angshuman,
A nice shot to show us the surroundings in which this young boy lives and how other people in the world live. Great sharpness showing every detail really well. A good life documentary.

Hi Angshu,
great shot, the house the laundry and the angry young man form a great ensemble.
Regards, Gerrit

It sounds like a hazardous journey you undertook to reach your destination. Very good shot of the little boy in his house. His red jumper catches the eye immediately and then our eye travels along the perspective lines of the house taking in the details as we go. I notice that either mum or dad is keeping a watchful eye at the back of the house. I look forward to the portrait.
Kath

Angshuman,
Superb catch here !
I like a lot the perspective, and the portrait of the child is magnificent.
Beautiful,

JB.

Hello Angshu,

Nice note about the Tibetans settling there. I knew about them. Same story with the people of Myanmar in Thailand I guess. No status back home, no status where they are right now. In the middle of it, waiting for a future to unveil when the situation in the home country changes...
Thanks for sharing this thoughtful moment!!

Greetings,
Dennis

Nice composition with the natural posture of the little boy, but also very interesting from the ethnical point of view. Your note is very interesting on that matter.

All the best,

Emmanuel

Vous remplissez, cher Angshu, tout l'intérêt du site, apprendre par l'intermédiaire des photos et des notes les us et coutumes du monde.
Merci pour tout.

Hi Angshuman,

Hi Angshuman

A superb daily life scene, with the boy at right, making a fine anchor & focal point. Good sharpness & colour. Tfs!

I think it's interesting inclunded this cute curious boy with his house and his living conditions, it will be more easy for us to understand your story. Honestly that hanged cloths has give a perfect combination with the subject (the boy). I like this shot Angshu...great catch and i still curious to see the portrait.
Thanks

Hello Angshuman, good composed photo and very nice colors.
Nice job my friend!

Hello Angshuman,

A very intersting (the notice too) and very beautiful photo. I like especially the young boy which is very well located in the picture, the glance and the expression of this boy are too very well collected.
Regards,
Roger

Hi Angshuman,

A good capture of the expression of the curious child, probably wondering about the visitors. The diagonal line of the house facade and the clothes hanging on the line are assets to the composition. The good light brings out the different tints of colors nicely. Have a nie day.

Pierre

Hi Angshuman,
There are no beautiful temples and magnificent monuments here, but the curious look of this child fills the photo of life and spontaneity, in a humble environment and with a few precarious living conditions.
The result of this scene is a very attractive and interesting work to graphical level.
Nice shot.
Friendly regards,
Josep

Very funny scene. What a wonderful portrait. Good POV and good light too.
Best wishes,
Achim

Hi Angshuman!
A different photo today:)!!! The curious little kid is really cute there, seems you really caught his eye. You framed him very well. I like the details, especially the clothes drying.Good daily scene!

Hi Angshu.
Belle photo-reportage sur les conditions de vie des habiants de ce pays. La frimousse méfiante du bambin attire l'oeil et la sympathie.
Jacques

Olá Angshu, reading your note made me remember my first approach to the Hymalaias that seemed like a dream...I agree with the no crop here. The details seen along the perspective are great additions to the daily life scene and the boy expression isn't that favorable - he looks suspicious...I bet that the later portrait will have a nicer expression ;-) I like a lot his framing and peeping attitude, though.
Best regards,
ricardo

Hello Anghu,

Early in the morning can you make the most beautiful pictures.
You took this image with a very high quality and sharpness.
The laundry gives a nice image of the culture, but the boy is real eye cather.
Very well done, TFS.

Best regards,
John.

Hi Angshu,
This one reminds me of a great trip i had there in 1982... by foot from Uttarkashi to Gangotri...with a 2 weeks stay on the way in Sukhi village, where i was sleeping in the mandir (no hotels anywhere near in these days....), with local families bringing me food everyday!
A nice glimpse of the local lifestyle, with the kid well placed in the frame... he looks quite suspicious though! ;D
Greetings
Laurent

Hello Angshuman,
So nice shot and composition...there is more than a simple daily life scene. The look of the kid gives a lot of sense to your photo...an became a great protagonist...

many wishes,
Thomas

Hi Angshu,
I think placing the boy firmly in his environment makes a much more attractve compo as well as meeting TE goals best. That little diagonal of hillside is inspired as is your fascinating note.
HLJ, Pat

Hello Angshuman,
He looks curious indeed, seeming to be thinking "who's this man coming?".
In fact his curious look towards you makes the photo, the rest is just the place where he lives which will help us to characterize this small place and which I like always to know.
your note is very interesting as it show us how tough it was to get to this small location kind of lost next to the big Himalaya's.
Cheers.
Paulo

Hi Angshuman,

Oh!!! What an expression ( curious & innocent look) on the face of the local boy. The cute little Pahadi boy with expressive looks on the verandah of the wooden house with colorful clothes hanging casually on the rope captures the mood of the photo and makes it an excellent composition. Great Photograph

Olá Angshu

Gosto muito desta foto, essa carinha do menino diz muito e você pode interpreta-la do seu ponto de vista. Cores bonitas, gosto da textura e pintura desgastada das paredes da casa.
Parabéns

Very nice that you didn't crop it Dear Angshu. This shot is just perfect. The captured curious look and the depth that reveals the hut, the blurred tiny little background slope with green, is just perfect! Thank you my friend.
