| Government of India is implementing The National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) to address the issues of rural unemployment and poverty. I was in this small village Panchayat (grassroot administrative unit), in Karim Nagar district of Andhra Pradesh. I found this group of women waiting for their daily wages under NREGS. The government had introduced smart card system through Self-Help Group for the payment of wages. These women were keenly watching and waiting for their wages through smart card system. Even though they did not show their faces, the body language reflect their anxiety. In contrast, the old woman with red saree on the right side has a different body language since she is an employee of the panchayat and gets her monthly regular wages. Hence no anxiety. |
