Photographer's Note

This is the reredos at the High Altar of the church, built by Franciscan friars in 1521 CE. The centre top frame presents Jesus on the cross (circa 35 CE) with a devout St. Francis standing at Jesus' right side and with his right hand on Jesus' hip. St. Francis died 1226 CE, in Italy: he stands on a graduated pedestal featuring three words - from the top down - pobreza, humildade, obediência (poverty, humility, obedience). Just above the altar is a statue of Mary holding the baby Jesus, and on the same level there are statues of the four evangelists. The church features fine decorative frescoes, paintings on wood showing the life of St. Francis, and the tombs of hidalgos incorporated in the flagstones of the floor.
