The School That Dances

There is a particular school in the Valod Taluka of South Gujarat, near the village of Kanjod on the banks of a very wide, winter (almost dry), monsoon full river which is called Vanasthali. The school,is primarily for the young people of surrounding tribal communities – they (loosely) follow the Gandhian ideal,of Nai Taleem education (although far from slavishly), they grow their own food and a surplus helps pay for the school. This school dances like I’ve never seen another school dance! They play together in the same way too. I love this place and is a favourite of any visit to India.

This (low res) photo was taken on a particular night that the ashramshalla(school for younger children) decided to have a bit of a party – it was magical – hours of drumming - at one point up to nearly 200 people dancing around a centrally lit tree in the dark.

My head still swirls thinking about it! Especially the dandia ras – sticks flying through the darkness to meet a rotating outer ring of increasingly energetic young dancers – they danced me into the ground! That’s when I took this photo on my camera substitute – the trusty old leaky light SVHS photo button!
