| [Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe |
| Pigs are the garbage cleaners of much of India, along with cows, crows, and occasionally goats. This was once the neighborhood of the elite, the royal palace is across the road. (The crumbling old house, is the home of the older lady, I put on yesterdays picture). |

Hi Gloria,
Maybe photos like these and others of yours on the ugly face of India aren't very "pretty", but I think they are important and intresting by showing the reality of that amazing country, so fascinating and repulsing at the same time.
Although I have never been to Rajasthan, I saw many scenes like this one, namely in the city that is home to the most popular monument icon of India, Agra, which a friend of mine that was there for the first time this Summer accurately described it as a gigantic dump with the most beautiful monuments of the world.
I understand that some Indians may find your photos insulting, as no one likes to see "their" ugliest aspects publicly exposed, but for our Western eyes is dificult not to be deeply impressed for these signs of extreme poverty and dirtiness. Having traveled a couple of times with my 9 years son in North Africa and Santo Domingo, I see that the dirtiness is one of the things that impresses him much. A frequent question of him when we ask him what he thinks about visiting a country is "is it very dirty?". Interestingly last year he found Paris "the most dirty place where I have been" :-). I guess it was for the gloomy looking subway stations and the darkness of all the street grounds.
Putting apart the sorrow for the people that leave on that place, namely that poor old lady, I find some strange beauty in this photo, I don't know why, maybe just because the pig family is cute.
Regards, José.
