Photographer's Note

Bikaner is a vibrant, dust-swirling desert town founded in the 15th century and is known as Jewel In The Sun well known for its fabulous carved-stone red buildings, numerous citadels, forts and 'havelis'. Encircled by a 7km-long 18th-century wall, the old city still has a medieval feel and through the labyrinth of narrow winding streets conceals a number of fine 'havelis'.

Constructed in red sandstone with elaborately detailed façades, this 15th century Rampuriya Havelis is among the well-known Havelis in the walled city and the pride of Bikaner. Built for the richest merchants, it's a visual delight with their beauty and splendour and despite the ravages of time, they still stand tall and proud.
