Photographer’s Note

Thaipusam is a Hindu festival celebrated mostly by the Tamil community and is the grandest and most awesome ritual celebrated in Southeast India.

For the procession, the devotees purge themselves of all mental and physical impurities. Some of them have their cheeks pierced with four meters long rod; they insist their minds are on their gods and they do not feel pain. Nor do their wounds bleed and there are no scars afterwards.

Hello Andre,
That looks really painfull, but as you mention if they are in the transe they don't feel it, I can not imagine having a piercing like this. He has quite an intense expression on his face. Good skin tones, and what I also like is the colourful marigolds around his neck as well as the colourful blurred out background to go with the festival atmosphere. I like that you have got his face so very close up and fitting tightly in the frame for this sharp and interesting portrait.

je n'ai jamais vu ça en vrai,et ça me donne des frissons!On voit à l'intensité de son regard que l'homme est en dehors de lui-même,et si je comprend qu'il ne ne sente aucune douleur,je suis étonnée qu'il ne reste pas de cicatrices par la suite!Ton cadrage et les couleurs sont top!

Rahhhhh ! C'est vraiment impressionnant. Ce qui est frappant ici, c'est le choc entre la beauté des couleurs du bas de l'image et la sensation de brutalité qu'exprime le haut de l'image. Brrr. Je me demande ce que ressentent ces personnes en se perçant les joues !!...

Wow, what people can do with themselves according to believes! I think they do feel the pain, but they can stand it or some kind of autohypnosis to minimalize pain feeling. Interesting thing is that their wounds don't bleed (as you wrote).
