I was walking through Jaisalmer's amazing fort when I met this charming young man named Ganesh, he was fascinated with life in the west but was also very proud to guide me through the streets of his city and show me the sites. He asked me if I would be interested in seeing the area where people lived in traditional mud huts outside the fort walls. We hadn't been walking in the area for very long before we were invited into a house for chai. There were three generations of women living in the house who all made me feel very welcome. They all were in purda and wore their sari's in the style of seedha pallu where the loose end of the sari is draped over their faces. I could see through the fine fabric that they were very curious about me and we talked for quite a while with the help of Ganesh who happily translated for us. The youngest girl (who was a new bride) sat close to my feet and as I took some photo's she lifted her veil. This is the one and only picture I got and it is a wonderful memory of a very touching moment.

As we were leaving she grabbed my hand to stop, pulled off one of her many tinkling bracelets and put it on my wrist; Ganesh explained that she was making me her sister. I wore that bracelet until it finally snapped some 8 months later but I still have it in my jewelry box as a reminder of that afternoon.

Hi Tracey,

A very natural portrait. It doesn't take a model for a portrait; every day people make the most beautiful portraits. The colours, the eyes, the little emboidery, very nice details. Good story as well, really adding to your picture! Nice one!!

Greetings, Dennis
