A classic, timeless (except the metal hat) scene. We were coming through Lake Ashtamudi, one of the largest lakes in the Kerala Backwaters, when I saw these fishermen and tried to catch one just as he was casting his fishing net. I got the shot, as you see, but it was a very low contrast one; even in an early January morning, it was already warm and hazy.

So I thought I would see how it worked in B&W, with a sepia wash for added effect.

Technical: Crop to about 1/3 of the original. Shadow/Highlights to bring out the main figure and add some contrast. Convert to B&W, using the sliders, espcially Cyan and Yellow, to give even more contrast, and a sepia tint to finsh.

Hi Daniel

Wow...this is most defintiely a timeless scene. Good choice of color mode. and a good capture too on the spur of the moment. Maybe the composition could have included a bit of sky too? But I do know you are too fond of very symmetric and orderly compositions. :)
This would look great in a lovely matted frame on the wall.

Cheers
Vivek

PS: You sure start your day early on TE. TE and morning coffee. Deifntiely a grt combo..I wish I could do that first thing in the morning. :)

Daniel, this works great in sepia. You captured the net in mid air really well - it looks slightly surreal, like a flying jelly fish! Overall the composition works really well.

Leon

A nice weekend

Hello Daniel,

THis is a very nice photo indeed. First of all, I love the sepia effect here. Very beautiful. Second, I like how sharp it is. Third, it shows real daily life of people from there. And finally, it is captured at the moment when the net is spreading. Well done.

The metal hat is incredible.... The timing in your shot is perfect, the quality of the textures excellent. i like your B&W treatment. A beautiful one.

Hello Dan,

A very good action shot that captures the net in flight, with a 1/1000 second shutter speed, at that. The choice of sepia, I believe, is wise for this shot, suggesting a certain timelessness. Well done. I've had to slow down my TE activity, but I am glad you had posted it when I accessed the site.
Warm regards,
Bulent
