We made a last-minute decision to visit Haridwar for an afternoon. Even though it meant an overnight train ride back to Delhi in second class, which I spent half-frozen, that day and evening were one of the most memorable of our trip, since it meant we got to watch the sunset ceremony at the Ganges.

Haridwar is one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism, the place where the Ganges river (Mother Ganga) flows out of the Himalayas onto the Indian plain. Legend holds that Vishnu's footprint is on the riverbank, which is lined with bathing ghats, the most important of which is Haur Ki Pauri, pictured here. We are standing on a small island reached by footbridge, surrounded by thousands of worshippers, watching as the priests perform the Aarti - "toward the highest love of God" (Sanskrit) - ceremony at sunset.

For this picture, I was aiming (at least in post-processing) for something resembling the medieval European paintings of holy scenes, and also to show the mass of humanity present; even in non-festival years, Haridwar is an immensely popular pilgrimage destination. This submission is also an opportunity to wish Happy Diwali to our Hindu members.

Technical: Cropping, then Curves on RGB, Red and Blue channels to tease out the lighting just the way I wanted it. The usual Noiseware to reduce noise (even at ISO 800, there was a lot), and sharpen things. A bit of cloning to remove some small lights I felt were distracting (including what looked to be a cell phone panel).

Hello Daniel
I think you have succeeded in giving the effect of an oil painting - and what an oil painting!! That was my first impression on seeing the thumbnail. There is so much to see and enjoy in this shot. The way the torchlight has picked out groups of faces and figures is beautiful as well as the light on the water. Colours are rich and glowing.
Superb!
Best wishes maggie

Such a great atmosphere in this image. I love the colors, I lovethe feeling. Indeed it makes me think at medieval holy scenes. An excellent one.

Hello Daniel
I missed this post prior to Diwali...got rendition of the Aarti on the banks of Ganges. Might be I would have liked to see a bit of the action, the dance, the poses...but not to take anything away from the photo. Well done in post processing, this has really come off well. You've captured the mood very well indeed!
With Regards
Angshu
Thanks for your Diwali wishes too Dan
