Orchha was founded in 1501 by the Bundela Rajput Raja Rudra Pratap. Orchha is unusual among Rajput capitals because there are three separate palaces rather than one gradually-extended palace. This is a general view of one of the palaces, the Raj Mahal or Raj Mandir (meaning the King’s Palace or King’s shrine), which was completed by Madhukar Shah between 1554 and 1591. The palace is surrounded by a battlemented wall with the bridge on the left, the only approachway from the main road of Orchha to the fort palace complex. The palace is in the shape of a perfect square that is further divided into two courtyards. The Raj Mahal’s facade is simplicity personified with hardly any ornamental detailing, but the interiors house some splendid paintings.

Apart from it’s fine architecture style, superb stone lattice work, Raj Mahal is most famous for its exquisite murals on the interiors.

The Betwa River earlier formed an island on which the Fort Palace complex was built, by dividing into two before the island and merging again. What you see in the FG, the open ground, with cultivated fields was part of the riverbed which has now dried up.

In the Workshop, a near identical picture of Raj Mahal, taken by Lala Deen Dayal, but taken 126 years ago, in 1882!. Quite a coincidence, isn't it? The picture, taken from the British Library Archives, shows the now dried up branch of the Betwa river in the foreground. The majority of the photographs were taken by Deen Dayal while on tour with Sir Lepel Griffin (1838-1908), who served as Resident at Indore and Agent to the Governor-General of central India between 1881 and 1888.

Hi Angshuman

Good sharpness, with a superb overview of the palace grounds. Excellent colour & composition. Tfs!

Hi Angshuman,
A fascinating palace made more interesting by your historical documentation. Looking at this scene you would think you're in Europe. Wonderfully captured and composed. Overall image quality and color saturation is very good too. Well done! tfs
Cheers,
Renier

Hi Angshuman,

This is an imposant palace. The point view is leading our eyes towards the Raj Mahal palace. The trees are a natural frame around the palace. The light enhance the beauty of the colors. Have a nice day.

Angshuman,
Nicely composed shot of this important palace. The comparison to the British library shot is very good! The lighting and colors are great with nice sharpness and detail.
TFS,
Asa

Interesting comparison of the 126 year old photo with yours today. It's a pity the river dried up, although it looks like they are doing some landscaping of the area. It is a well chosen POV so the palace is taken from the corner so you have double perspective to put some depth into the scene. Great minds think alike ;D
Kath

Angshu,
excellent documetary providing us the photograph of 126 years ago! What made the river dry up? Some dam?
The composition is a good one, but the foreground is a little bit dark and the leaves gives some shiny reflections. It seems to me that a polarizing filter to avoid these reflections could enhance the image as well as a ND grad filter (1-2 stops, maybe) to open up more the light in the foreground.

Hi Angshu,
A lot of details to look at here.. the small fields in FG, long wall and arches, then on top the superb fort.. it looks a great place! Sharp and bright, nie colors too. Even the electric line is not disturbing, as it took me a while to see it as it blends well in the sky, and i am still am not sure of what it is!
Greetings
Laurent

Hi Angshuman,
It is a good composition, very well organized and with very beautiful elements that have a nice graphism, as this palace of magnificent architecture and the landscape that surrounds it. The image has a good balance and a good lighting, with a few saturated well colors.
Your note has a good information about this place.
A great work, my friend.
Best regards,
Josep

The parallelism between the two photos is a great option! The castle is unchangeable excluding the surroundings. The PoV is the same that Deen Dayal had chosen for shooting. Your Lumix did a very good work, registering the view!
Wonderful architecture, fine details and natural colours!
Warm regards,
Athanasios.

Nice view of the place and of the battlmented wall (I learned a new word here, excelelnt for my English). The river seems to have been replaced by the fields/gardens a long time ago, but for the colors it is much better since the green constracts well with the red/brown of the building and wall.

All the best,

Emmanuel

Hi Angshumanda,
Congratulations on your 350th!!! My God, what an achievement. I know how difficult it is to find a 100, and here you are with so many and each a wonderful treat on its own right. This one shows an amazing piece of architecture. Well taken. I am curious to know what that white band is just above the fence.
Regards,
Shaeri

Hello Angshuman. The wide space in front of this stunning architecture works well in this composition. The column bridge makes good horizon with sharp detail against the spotless blue sky. well done and best regards. Jusni

Hello Angshu,

Very interesting to see the workshop of over 100 years ago, combined with the new photograph. Actually, next to the river, nothing really changed here. A very pleasant photograph, a good note and wonderful in combination with the workshop.
I've been thinking about doing a new/old series. I just have one problem with it and that's copyright... In a sense, when placing the workshop without paying or asking reproduction rights, you are violating copyright. I'm wondering how you think about this issue, since it is what holds me back to do an old/new series.

Greetings!
Dennis

Hello Angshu,

I prefer this wonderful picture, the WS is not at once my favorite image.
You placed the palace excellent to the background high in this image.
Lovely lines and good composition, soft of colours and good presentation.
Thanks for sharing.

Best regards,
John.

Hello Angshu,
Really interesting to see the comparism to old times!
Nothing much seems to have happened except for a little less water nowadays...
This is an attractive composition, rich colours and sharp fine details in a well exposed image!
Greetings,
Pablo -

This looks like a beautiful place and castle. I love the colours in the foreground and the POV of this photo. Wonderful shot.
Best wishes,
Achim

Hello Angshu, it is surprising to note that photo catch in 1882 is extremely comparable with holds, if it is not that at that time there was much more water, leaves against it there to more vegetation nowadays, but in both cases the frontage of Raj Mahal seems to resist time, beautiful opportunism to sincerely present this photograph to us which does not age,...................Hello Angshu, il est surprenant de constater que la photo prise en 1882 est fort comparable à la tienne, si ce n’est qu’à cette époque il y avait beaucoup plus d’eau, part contre il y à plus de végétation de nos jours, mais dans les deux cas la façade de Raj le Mahal semble résister au temps, bel opportunisme de nous présenter cette photo qui ne vieillit pas, bien amicalement

Hello Angshu,
Ce palais était particulièrement bien protégé avec ces imposantes murailles,
Très intéressant de pouvoir comparer les deux époques avec l’autre image dans le WS,
Un très bon point de vue ici et très bonne note également,
Bien cordialement,
Robert

Hi Angshumanda,
First of all Congrats for the 350 th shot. Phenomenal acheivement.
Regarding the shot-Did you see the British library photo first and then shoot this?? The POV s are exactly the same. The inclusion of the classic picture in the WS helps us understand the difference. Good documentary shot. Good composition. BTW, I can see a white line over the boundary wall. Is it a scratch?
Regards,
Sagarneel.

Dear Angshu,
Beautiful architectural image with splendid details. The composition is spectacular, clarity is excellent. Great! Have a nice day

I don't remember that view (and more precisely that wall). Then, it's a kind of discovery and I do like that. I never imagined Orchha could be green. Useful (to me !!).
Stéphane

Hello Angshu!
Nice picture with beautiful colors , nice contrast and good light.
I like your point of view, the deoth and the sharpness very much.
The frame matches to the composition very well!
Jonas

Oh, I wish I could go back there one day, I was struck by all the beauty of this little village, all those splendid buildings, temples and mausoleums too... Plenty of good memories about that place !
And yet, I don't remember so well this POV - your WS is excellent, you must have been really glad to find it !
Colours are beautiful and natural (I also wondered about this white band, then read your answer to Shaeri, this is what I had suspected !)
Compliments and best regards,
Cath.

hi angshu,
excellent pov. the palace with the fort wall and the bridge give a complete picture. its nice that a photograph was taken 126 years back from a similar position. it can be noticed that then there were some more buildings close to the palace which don't exist now. tfs.
manoj
