Chennai Sangamam 2008 (The festival of Chennai) - the second of its kind - featured folk music and dance from all over Tamil Nadu, India. One hundred venues from city squares, parks, beaches, railway stations, bus terminals, markets, temples and churches were used. There were performances of every kind from Indian classical music to folk music, jazz, western classical, rock, rap, folk dances, art shows and screenings of film classics. Seven hundred artistes of every known Tamil folk form performed at the week long carnival. Food and craft stalls, fireworks at the start and finish, a film star night to represent the city's film industry – there was something for everyone.
This is the Poikkal Kudari Aattam or Dummy Horse Dance where the dancer wears the dummy of a horse's body on his/her hips. The horse is made of light-weight materials and covered with colourful fabric that sways with the steps of the dancer. The dancer stands on wooden pegs that make the sound like the hooves of a horse. The dancer brandishes either a sword or a whip to complete the effect. |

Hello Sridher,
Very good capture, the shot really involves me in the festival. I like the black surrounding the man, really brings out the vibrant colours of the costume and the lighting. Nice composition, the expression on the mans face shows his enthusiasm and willingness to perform.
Good work
cheers
Peter
