On top of the rock is the smallish Shiva temple, also known as the "Old Lighthouse". The sculpture is undistinguished, but there is a view for miles around. Over the five rathas, to the south, there is a nuclear energy station - Kalpakkam, while to the west can be seen the flat lagoon (with, I recall, an unsightly rubbish tip) and the original port of Mamallapuram.
Underneath, uniquely, is the Mahishasuramardini Mandapa dating from the middle of the 7th C, with two very fine bas relief carvings. These we will see in the next uploads. The interior columns feature the Pallava lion bases. |
