Prambanan is one of the main tourist attractions in Jogja (the abbreviation of Yogyakarta/Jogjakarta). It's located only few kilometers away from the city itself.
It's a group of Hindu temples dedicated mainly to Siva, one of the three main gods of Javanese-Hinduism. The original name of these collection of temples is Lorojonggrang. Prambanan is only the name where the temples are located. However, the name Prambanan is more popular (at least for me).
The temple accross the gate, in the picture, is the main temple-the biggest out of the three main temples of the complex. The temple has four rooms, one of which is the main room with the statue of Siva himself within it. There is always a sense of mystery and awe everytime I enter this room. Perhaps, a divine presence within a man-made structure.
As you can see in this picture, there was a renovation work going on. You may not believe it, but even after hundreds of years since the temples' erection, the technique for cleaning and restoring them in this modern era seems not so much different with the technique people used to build them. Perhaps, that is the best way to handle these fragile relics-that is using the same tools by which they were erected.
In 2006, this group of temples survived a major earthquake in Jogja which killed more than 5.000 people. It again shows the genius of ancient achitecture. They suffered minor damage while many modern buildings collapsed during the earthquake.
This is an old photo of mine, taken when I was still a student in Jogja. I lost its original file thus I can't provide more data of the picture.
