Besakih Temple

Besakih, Pura Besakih, is the most important hinduisti holy area on the island Bali and "mother temple" of all balinese temples. The temple was built probably in the 8th century and is located on an approximately 950 meters height on southwest slope of the Gunung Agung, a still active volcano. The complete area consists of over 200 buildings. Each prince family has its own district. All village communities have within the area own temples or shrines, which are surrounded by walls.

The holiest temple in the center is the Pura Panataran Agung Besakih, in which God Sanghyang Widhi Wasa after the Indian terminology is admired as Trimurti - which is the Brahma Shiva Vishnu.
