Photographer's Note

During my stay on the southern tip of Bali, I was amazed at just how important the sea was to the local residents. It seemed that virtually every adult male was either fishing from shore or from a boat daily. Surely a large portion of the daily catch would go straight to the mouths of the many hungry tourists visiting the area.

This particular fisherman was fishing (and smoking) at the world famous surf break, Bingin. The tide was out and the water was calm, apparently good conditions for fishing. I moved to position the sun behind the man, and underexposed the scene to bring out the strong orange colour that is visible. A simple scene of a somewhat traditional daily life in Bali.
