Photographer's Note

Only and only once every year, in Bali Island, in the ancient aga (original people) village of Tenganan an old ritual of manhood is still being held.
From the very young, to the very old, but mostly for the young, strong and brave men, they host a competition of traditional fighting to the blood. Instead of swords and knives, whom they still carry around the village, they use blocks of thorny pandan leaves, a plant that resembles a vicious cactus like agave with thousand of thorns on saw like edges.
Almost everyone bleeds, some very seriously after the battle, some even scar, all in a blend of perpetuing the tradition, machismo and effort to prove themselves in front of the ladies of their choice. And ladies pay a lot of attention to it, rest assured.

These are Tenganan villagers in the anticipation of the fight.
