Photographer’s Note

A local is collecting small rounded stones at Kusamba beach.

Like water,
the world traverses you,
and for a while,
lends you its colours.
It then draws back,
leaving you once again
to face the emptiness
that one carries in oneself,
to face that central insufficiency of the spirit
that one must learn to live with, to fight,
and which,
paradoxically,
is possibly our surest driving force.

Come un’acqua,
il mondo filtra attraverso di noi,
ci scorre addosso,
e per un certo tempo ci presta i suoi colori.
Poi si ritira,
e ci rimette davanti al vuoto che ognuno
porta in sé,
davanti a quella
specie d’insufficienza centrale dell’anima
che in ogni modo bisogna imparare a costeggiare,
a combattere e che,
paradossalmente,
è il più sicuro dei nostri motori.

Hello Lucas,
l'emploi du très grand angle est assez impressionnant !
Le placement de ce personnage au premier plan accentue la déformation mais donne une vraie profondeur à l'image. La netteté est magnifique.

Hey..the presence of the subject nailing the rule of thirds well almost..wish the boat was far left of the frame..would be the ideal balance...

But the disposition..the presence of the little boy has made this frame so special..

simple yet..it is the eye that has won over...

Hi Luca

I love the POV, the sensation of wide space. The effect is curious, with the crouching indonesian, all the dimensions seems to be wrong. Like in an hallucination, where the landscape would unreasonably change. I also like the contrast with the dark , solid pebbles and the clear, liquid water... The most vulnerable element being not the one that apparently is the strongest. The semicircle around the scene enhances this sensation of vulnerability.

Ciao Luca,
wwwooaaa! this is excellent. The round shape and color of the conic hat really pops out in this composition!
I like the deformation by the wide angle as well, I think that somehow, it gives a touch of dynamism to your picture.
I also like the veins of water from the wave going back to see.
I think the compo is unbalanced by the presence of the boat just over the local's head and I also think the horizon is tilted a bit. But this is still one of my fave that was posted on TE this year.

Hello Luca,

Good use of wide angle and high pov. The man makes an intriguing view. Great how the hand with the pot is 'sticking out' in the bottom of the frame. Colour pattern is great too.

I loved your dynamic composition very much. The way the picker hides underneath his hat, the way his hand reaches towards us leaves a great effect on the viewer.
And the poem you selected is great, too.

I tried capturing similar scenes on Bali recently ( not posted yet) but I think you have caught them better than me. I like your choice of lens for this, the scene suits the almost wide angle approach.
I think your horizon is slightly tilted.
