Smoking in Lombok
 |
|
| [Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe |
Although smoking is declining in western countries, in Indonesia the opposite is true. Virtually every man smokes, many continuously from the moment they rise to the moment they sleep. Many chose to smoke cigarettes made from locally grown and sold tobacco mixed with cloves, called kretek, such as this man.
The tobacco industry is the second largest employer, after the government. In 1980 a study found that, "Indonesian households spent more on tobacco than they did on clothing and footwear, on meat, or on medical and educational needs combined, and twice as much as they spent on festivals. The poorest households spent more on tobacco than they did on fish, meat, and eggs combined".

Hello Steven,
I'm beginning to suspect you of being sponsored by some big company, or maybe the Suharto family who I believe made a lot of money from the tobacco industry. This is also a good portrait with fabulous sharpness. This man seems to have a very serious approach to his smoking habits.

Hi Stephen,
A great tight composition concentrating all our attention on his eyes and his smoke. Good sharp focus on his facial features and hat and nice natural colouring too. I like that we can see the strands of smoke.

Another excellent portrait and superb detail and color. An interesting model once again. TFS and have a happy day!
Hi Stephen,
Superbly focused on just the front of the man's face, and all else a little blurred. Good eye contact from the man, and I like the way the cigarette is slightly out of focus, it puts more of our attention on the man.
It seems smoking is a huge problem everywhere in Asia, here in China also, it's estimated that 80% of men smoke and with cigarettes costing as little as $0.35 a pack there's little incentive for them to quit!
Nice shot, and interesting notes too
Regards
Lee
