Travelling 25 km east of Singaraja, we reached a unique seaside temple, the Pura Ponjok Batu. The Ponjok Batu Temple (ponjok batu meaning pile of stones) is perched on a rocky cliff next to a beach.

The Pura Ponjok Batu is a temple to pray for safety and good luck. The Balinese who travel past will always make time to stop at the temple to pray, and to receive blessings for safety during their journey.

The temple is at an elevation and reached by climbing about 20-25 steps from the road, while the beach is a good 30 steps below the road level. There was a ceremony or festival going on in the temple and our driver Ngurah and myself decided to go in.

Upon ascertaining my religion & caste, & after being "cleansed" by the priest, I entered the temple complex wearing a sarong & salempot (waist sash).

I took a stroll within the big complex and saw traditionally priests in white and ladies offering their prayers in front of a huge stone edifices (seen in the BG). The complex was decorated with Penjors , yellow & white flags & festoons and other festival ornamentation, mostly made of reed, with the frangipani trees (one can be seen on the right) adding to the beauty. Three priests dressed in white can be seen sitting on the left. It was a revering and fascinating atmosphere, as the gamelan music began to float in.

I think that this was the Odalan ceremony, which is the Anniversary Day of the temple. This celebration happens every 210 days, which is the duration of a Balinese calender year. The celebration lasts about a week & on those days, there is a carnival like atmosphere around the temple area.

Hello Angshu
I think you became a Bali specialist( about temples, ceremonies...) by now! Your image is full of details to look at with light/shade contrast and great colors.
Cheers
Marilyn

Hi Angshu,
nice image about Balinese culture. Such a beauty in their traditions.

Dear Angshu,
This shot seems rather crowded to me. As in another previous shot of your (of a woman in center in the role of a goddess) there seems to be many details in it that can wach be a subject of a shot. The three people sitting clearly stand out but the right side is a little difficult to understand.
But, generally speaking, a successful shot in conveying the carnival atmosphere.

Hi Angshu,
there is a lot to see on this fine composed picture with the shaded people in the corner and the dark rich carved stoens up above. The yellow forms a fine contrast.

Hi Angshu,
Interesting view of the ceremony, from a good angle, showing the people as well as the temple. Light colors and sharpness are quality...
All the best
Laurent

A difficult picture since there are plenty of thinks in the image and it is not very easy to organize them. The diagonal view was probaly the best idea. Very nice yellow colors, repeated in different places in the image. And I am happy to see what a frangipani tree looks like, since I knew the name but not the shape.

All the brest,

Emmanuel

The yellow colors here really make the picture giving a vivid touch in this temples environment. There are lots of details all around, bali is really a fascinating place it seems with all these ceremonies.

hi angshu...
nice shot! you properly mixed the scene with culture and landscape! the presence of yello cloth gives a nice contrast...
greetings...

Bonjour, mon ami Angshu,
Chaque fois que j'ouvre vos images, c'est une découverte. Apprendre, regarder, comprendre ce continent éloigné.
Ici, encore, c'est avec grand plaisir de découvrir cette très bonne composition.
Amitiés.
Philippe

First, you have a very good and detailed note. The photo show extremely well all the decorations made for the ceremony and that yellow over the clack stones is a pleasure for the eye. Of course, adding the three priests was a excellent idea. Well done.
Antonio

Hi Angshuman. Great photo. I love the colours in this shot, the gold contrasts well with the sky. Good sharpness and detail also. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Hi Angshumanda,
The temple at the back ground is the most attractive feature in this!!The shot reflects a perfect celebration atmosphere!!You're lucky man to get the glimpse of a celebration which happens every 210 years!!
Regards,
Sagarneel.

Hi Angshuman,
It would be nice to be part of a ceremony as it would immerse you to the culture. Do they have big food feast after the ceremony ... that wiuld also be wonderful making it a complete cultural experience. Nicely captured scene ... colors and image quality is also good. Well done! tfs
Cheers,
Renier

I had totally the wrong idea of the scale of both the temple and the awning until I saw the seated priests, who seems so small. This must have been a very special experience for you, being able to take part in the ceremony. A very colourful and interesting image. You timed your visit perfectly as it must be difficult to compare the 365 day calendar we use to their 210 day one. Well done
Kath

Hi Angshuman,

A good POV of this section of the ceremony, the photo has a good composition, DOF and nice colors. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Angshuman
You've been lucky to attend to such a rare ceremony, my friend.
Exotism of Balinise rituals is beautifully depicted by those vivid golden decorations, costumes of seated participants and the beautiful prespective created by the canopy.
Best regards.
Robert

Hi Angshuman,
Perfectly caught the atmosphere of this ceremony, with its beautiful colorful and many interesting elements in the composition. The light is very well treated and the graphical and chromatic quality is very high.
Excellent shot.
Friendly regards,
Josep

Hi Angshu,
The bright & graceful reed ornaments swaying in the wind provide strong contrast to the dark, solid stone . The light was clearly difficult but you got good color in the sky which helps to mitigate the dark FG.

Bonita foto desta cerimônia Angshu.
Ótima composição e o contraste de cores está maravilhoso...boa luz e sombras.

Hi Angshuman
Something disturbs me in this capture. Maybe too much details, I`m not sure. But the composition is interesting and has great colours :).
Regards

Hello Mr. B,

An extremely engaging first-person account accompanying this excellent photo. The bright yellow cloth hanging in various places make a compelling highlight to an area that is otherwise is shadows. The bright sky, however, provides a gorgeous background.

Have a good weekend,

Bulent

Angshuman,
Superb yellow / blue contrasts, with nice dynamics in your compo.
I like a lot too your exposure management.
Regards,
JB.

The pov is OK to have in the scene.
Good light and great colors, especiallythe yellow one.

Like in many ceremonies in Bali, there is so much to observe here, everything seems well settled but in the same time a bit improvised ; great golden colours with blue sky...
Best regards,
Cath.
