Remembering children, a photo from Nara, Kinki

Photographer's Note

These little Buddha statues are known as Jizō, or Ojizō-sama. This divinity is seen as the guardian of children and of the souls of mizuko, the souls of stillborn, miscarried or aborted foetuses, in the ritual of mizuko kuyō (offering to water children).
This picture was taken at the Hase-dera temple in Sakurai in the Nara Prefecture. Sometimes these buddha statues also wear bibs and caps but here they were uniform which made this view very impressive.

Hello Andre - an interesting and touching memorial shown here, with a good angle and POV creating a sense of size that a head on shot would not have. Impressive how far up and back these statues go, a sense enhanced by the wide angle you've given it. Nice mossy green color throughout as well. Thanks!

Hello Andre, I have also visited a similar memorial temples but this one is very special indeed referring to children.

Hi Andre,

Left a critic the other day & was horrified to see that it did not go through...
Sorry for late response busy with work.
I find this image so sad but at the same time it is wonderful that the lost babies will always be remembered with the presence of this ' cute ' Memorial... very fitting to have baby buddha's.
