Photographer’s Note
South of Miyazaki near Aoshima the coastal rock formations are unique. These rocks are called "Oni-no-sentaku-iwa," or "The Giants' Wash-board." The mountains reach all the way to the coast in this area and I think this washboard effect is caused by tilting of the sedimentary layers and subsequent coastal erosion. (I might be wrong here ,any Geologists out there let me know!)
In The top left of the photo you can see some of the man made concrete coastal barriers. We get occasional Typhoons with huge seas during Summer and early Autumn.
