[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
I was working in Tokyo in the fall of 1988. Every evening the TV news would include, along with the weather report, a "fall foliage" report - how far south were the leaves changing. So when I had a weekend to spare at the beginning of November, I took the bullet train up to Tohoku, the northern part of the main island of Honshu, to the old samurai town of Kakunodate, where the leaves were reported to be especially spectacular. They were, as this picture of momiji - Japanese maple leaves - makes clear.

Side notes:

(1) I had made the train and hotel reservations in Japanese using a local travel agent in Tokyo. When I (proudly) told my co-workers what I had done, the manager came up to me and asked: "Why are you going so far away? What if something should go wrong?" First, it was a weekend, and the computer system was still in testing, so the office was closed. More to the point, I was supposed to leave Japan Friday evening; the home office had said it didn't matter to them if I came back Monday instead. This shows the typical Japanese attitude of the time.

(2) The Japanese collect these maple leaves as they turn brown and preserve them in brine. A year later, they serve them up as momiji tempura; it has texture, but no taste. If you get to Japan in the fall, order some; your host will be delighted.

Technical: Kodachrome, digitized by ScanCafe. Slight use of Levels to darken midtones and raise highlights. No sharpening needed. (Isn't Kodachrome wonderful?)

Hi Daniel,
Slight light falling on leaves and simple background present a perfect scene. It is just like spreading red leaves on a smooth sheet. Very simple, but quite impressive
Congrats,
Burcu

The light coming only on the red leaves is wonderful. And the shapes of these leaves are so perfect
A nice evening

Hi Daniel,

I like the colours of the leaves but it's sad that the background isn't completely dark.

The shadows are very nice too.

Nice picture !

Regards,

Adrien

I love the way the light is catching the leaves, emphasising the wonderful colour. The black background is perfect and you have framed the shot well with the main branch coming from the top corner. Interesting note. I'm not sure about the tempura though; I'd probably give it a miss. Good work

Hi Daniel,
Great photo of the beautiful leaves with such gorgeous autumnal reddish colours. They are wonderfully brought out by the dark background and the light management is excellent. Thanks a lot for sharing!
Regards,
Lars

Hi Dan!
I could not get the interesting POV here. Seeing tree leaves as a subject, one would think about a low POV, but the bokeh suggests an asphalt, therefore i guess you took the photo from the top of that maple???
I like the superb colors and sharpness of the leaves a lot.
And the note about the wearther report :"how far south were the leaves changing" is very interesting :)
Cheers,
Deniz

What can I say...It's amazing photo:)
