About 150 kilometers upcountry from Luang Prabang is Nong Khiaw

Nong Khiaw nestles along the shallow but rapid Nam Ou river and under the Phu Nang Nawn (Sleeping Princess mountains). We reached there in the afternoon after a 4 hour ride in a bus crammed with tourists on the way to Louangnamtha & Phongsali, and some locals. We crossed the high bridge across Nam Ou & booked for our staying in the nameless guesthouse just on the other side of the bridge.

The Nam Ou is a major tributary of the Mekong, rising as the Sung Ou on the Lao-China border. With a huge catchment area it quickly picks up size and width, as it runs south. "Nam" in Lao means River. So saying “Nam Ou river” is actually incorrect. I’m not sure as to what ‘Ou’ means’

A walk uphill from Nong Khiaw are the caves where villagers hid during American carpet bombings of this area in the mid 70s (incidentally Lao is the world’s most bombed country). After visiting the caves, we scurried back to Naung Khiaw to watch the sunset in the pristine setting. But the sun managed to beat us in the race & by the time we reached the bridge in Nong Khiaw, well, all that was evidence of the sundown was a crimson patch in the sky & in the waters. Darkness swwops in pretty fast in this small hilly place.

The boats lined up on the right bank take people during daytime, to Luang Prabang (upstream towards the top of the frame) or to Phongsali (downstream).

I had taken a shot from the same place, but 3 hours earlier at around 3 in the afternoon, facing the sun. You may want to check it out here

Hello Angshuman. I like the scene you show us here. Mountains and forests are a favourite of mine and this picture truly display the best of tropical landscape. Nice work with the colors even in low light. A beautiful place when sunny I imagine :-)

Good shot with the boats on theNam Ou and the mountans in the background.Good POV from the bridge and nice reflections.

Hi Angshuman

It looks similar to scenery along the Mekong near Pak Ou Caves. Wonderful sharpness & colour. Tfs!

Bonjour Angshu,
Une prise de vue qui semble avoir été prise depuis un avion. Le grand spectacle s'offre à nous. La beauté des lieux, l'immensité, tout cela rend bien humble la nature humaine.
Une très belle photo.
Amitiés.
Philippe

Hello Angshuman
Nice sunset without the Sun ;). Interesting colours and the place is beautiful, but you know about it :).

Hi Angshu,
very good POV and composition. I also like the light on the river and the little boats.
Regards, Gerrit

Olá Angshu, I was about to mention what Sabyasachi mentioned and than read his critic. The light is nicer, most problably better than facing directly to the sun and the result is a of course, a better looking image, not only the sky, but also the reflections on the river and the greennery. The other has a softer image and I'm not sure if this one is a bit too sharp. This advantage POV from the bridge is definately great!
Firendly regards,
Ricardo

Hi Angshu,
I had mentioned somewhere recently that some of the best sunset shots come without the sun actually being present. This cannot strictly be called a sunset but I love the late evening mood here. Beautiful natural surroundings. Its a much improved verion from your earlier 'Sunset at Nong Khiaw' and the 'Boats of Nong Khiaw. Maybe the better looking sky is the key here?
Best Wishes
Sabyasachi

A beautiful 'missed' sunset shot Angshu. There is a little noise present, but that takes nothing away from the beautiful colours, not only in the sky, but in the greenery and of the water. Nicely done.
Best wishes
Mark

Hi Angshuman,

A good POV of the Nam Ou river, of the forest and of the mountains, the photo has a good composition, DOF and nice colors. Thanks for sharing.

Great pink colours even if you missed the sunset. Both the sky and its reflection in the water have excellent colours and textures. It conveys lots of quietness, a great shot.

Hi Angshu,
Not quite missed, the lovel color in the water and sky still lingers as a testament to it's beauty. I like a framing with the boats along the river, and the mountains to one side.
Regards, Pat

I wonder why this photo is so familiar to me; also the timing :D.
That modern bridge you were on is certainly a good vantage point for these shots. Thanks for the memory.

Hi Angshuman,
Very good capture of this fluvial landscape surrounded with an exuberant vegetation and high mountains. I like your setting, with the diagonal that it goes out of the left side and fall towards the right, with the river in the center with a few fabulous reflections, and the sky with the soft light of the sunset.
Very well compound, my friend.

Josep

angshu,
you have missed the sunset but not the after effect. good color and light. reflection on the water is excellent here. nice pov.

Nice light in the foreground on the river and in the background over the mountain. The landscape itself is nice with the turn of the river and the vegetation of both sides (perhaps a bit dark on the left though.
All the best,

well captured and nicely composed shot of the river and the thick vegetation surrounding it. Good lighting and very nice pastel colour of the sky, perfectly reflected in the water. Well done!

Hi Angshu
Good pov and framing of this river scene. A shame you missed the sun for this one as the effect would have been spectacular I feel. The curvature in the river is a good aspect to capture too, as it delivers some perspective and depth. I also like the way you have framed the mountain range cascading downwards from the left side of the frame. Good work.

Hello Angshu,
A pleasant river view!
Interesting point of view provides pleasant reflections from the river and good lines for the composition...

Hello Angshuman,
I like the mood that comes out of this pictures. There is a sort of bitterness with the color tone, the boats foating idly and the forest. I like tose landscapes witht he forest in the abrupt mountains. Although I like this picture very much, I think you overdid the sharpening a little bit.
All the best,
Marc

Hi Angshuman,

Oh I still remember this beautiful place on earth....and I still remember the long bus ride from Luang Nam Tha. It was a release to come to this quiet place and lie on the hammock and enjoy the amazing view over the river......ups sorry - back to the photo:

Eventhough you missed the sunset you still managed to achieve some nice colours and nice reflections in the river. The right atmosphere is there!!

Hello Angshuman
You might have missed the sun,but still you benefited of a good light and colors.
A look that seems to be wild, but the presence of so many boats goes for a populated area, still pristine for a change(in relation to my country).
I like your point of view looking down.
Charles
