Feel the AUTUMN color of Kuching, Malaysia!

Located near the equator, Malaysia's climate is categorised as equatorial, being hot and humid throughout the year. Annual rainfall exceeds 2000mm a year and the average temperature is 27 degrees Celsius. Malaysia faces two monsoon winds seasons – the Southwest Monsoon from late May to September, and the Northeast Monsoon from November to March. The Northeast Monsoon brings in more rainfall compared to the Southwest Monsoon.

The highest temperature was recorded at Chuping, Perlis on 9 April 1998 at 40.1 degrees Celsius. The lowest temperature was recorded at Cameron Highlands on 1 February 1978 at 7.8 degrees Celsius. The highest rainfall recorded in a day was 608 mm in Kota Bharu, Kelantan on 6 January 1967. The highest rainfall recorded in a year was 5687mm at Sandakan, Sabah in 2006. Meanwhile, the lowest rainfall recorded in a year was 1151 mm at Tawau, Sabah in 1997.

The wettest place in Malaysia is Kuching, Sarawak with an average rainfall of 4128mm with 247 days of rain a year. The driest place in Malaysia is in Chuping, Perlis with average rainfall of only 1746mm a year.

I was experimenting with heavy new lens of 50-500mm by hand held shooting and it was stormy evening sky before rain. The color of the trees caught my attention, together with the dry trees in the background making it look like temperate climate scenery. But this is really Kuching, and no, it is not on highlands, just mean sea ground level of the city. Thank you for looking. Cheers, bill

Malaysia has a tropical, humid climate with temperatures averaging 86°F (30°C), though it is cooler in the highland areas. The major change in seasons is marked by the arrival of the monsoons that bring heavy downpours on the east coast of Peninsula Malaysia, the northeastern part of Sabah and the western end of Sarawak (from November to February). Boat trips to the islands do not run during the height of the monsoon. The best time to visit Malaysia is between April and October.

hi Bill,
50-500mm sounds like a monster lens :) what are your impressions? is it sharp? is it clear? I seem to detect some blurr from camera shake, but that's hardly surprising with such a long lens.
you're right, the scene does look a little like famous autumn colours in further north. even sky co-operates and adds to the feeling of a gray, dark, cool and wet autumn day :) the bare trees is an interesting accent, I like a lot how the white trunks seem to ling the green foreground and gray-blue sky. nice shot.

best,
Kristine

Hi Bill,
nice composition and colors but there is something srange in sky color and background trees. frame is nice and new to me.

thanks,
mzmehr

Very exciting and unusual colours, Bill and a fine sharp image. regards Kevin

Hi Bill,
I am surprised to see such a photo from Malaysia, as I didn't know you have such an autmumn there!

As far as quality of the photo is concerned, well, it is not perfect. I think the problem is this lens. With such a long focal lenght you get shallow DOF. Both foreground and background seem out of focus. One thing that remains in focus and is sharp is this grey car - the rest is strangely blurred. Also, parts of the image are clearly overexposed, which I consider very strange for Nikkon D80, which is known to have good dynamic range.

So my conclusion is that Sigma 50-500 is not a good choice for landscape photography.

But then, sometimes we just have to make a shot with whatever lens we have at the moment.

greetings

michal

Hi Bill
nice color of those trees, is it storm coming soon when you make this picture, just looking at cloudy sky, and your note is very informative nice picture TFS

Chirasak

Hi Bill,

Good POV. The drawback is the foreground is a little unsharp. This may reason out to be the heavy lens without tripod at 270mm focusing distant.

Besides that everything else is good.

Adam

Hi Bill,
nice vertical composition, beautiful autumnal colours. I like this photo.

Hi Bill,
Wonderful contradiction in this image. Well spotted
A bit wobbly on the focus but the cars are sharp. I don't know how you can hand hold that big lens.
Always a pleasure looking at your images.
Cheers
Peter

Hi Bill,

That is a big zoom lens. The trees in the foreground towards the trees in the background without leave. The diagonal line of the road is an asset to the composition. The light brings out the best of the colors and is giving them a good contrast. Have a nice day.

Hello Bill,
this real and dramatic shot.
I like it very much as it derives your eyes into believing something that is true when it not really teu.
Wonderful shot of great composition and excellent colours.

An excellent Point of view and fine visible layers.
I like also the light and contrast.
Anyway...I am not sure if this is Malaysia...:o)

Good work, thanks Bill for your great gallery.

Hi Bill,
good contrast between the colorfull and barren trees.
The silver stems stand out beautifully against the blue and white sky.

Hey Bill,

Hm interesting. I was just thinking to myself today - perhaps we don`t have such dense and marvelous forests as yourself, but at least they get very colorful every autumn. Ironic. :)

A good theme, and a good photo. Although one can see that you`re still getting used to your new lens.

Best regards.

Hello Bill,

Fantastic colors and you captured a hard scene while handling your telephoto lens with arm. Similar textures in Suriname too, also another great similarity that many of plant brought by Indonesian Javanese during colonization period (mango, Faya Lobi -Lat. Ixora- etc.) One of similar tree is front of our garden. Excellent capture, congratulations. Have a nice new week.

Best Regards,

Ertugrul

Hello Bill,
Good pov to show variety types of plants, although have no four seasons in Malaysia but these colourful plants give autumn feels, photo taken without a tripod is a little blur, however thanks for sharing.
Have a nice day.
Ally

Hi Bill. I am enjoying the geography lesson as much as the image captured beautifully in tall frame. The kelat paya is really colorful like autumn leaves. I have eight of them lining up my driveway. The dead trees and the moody sky is a hit. The white layer just above the horizon making the sky really interesting. With this Bigma, I guess the tripod is a must. I am surprised with the 1/60s shot hand hold. The blurry foreground could have been improved with smaller aperture higher than f/16 - but of course the tripod will definitely be a handy tool. Very good experiment and the framing is immaculate. I like it and thanks for sharing. Have a nice day. Jusni

Great work with the high-saturation approach to this one. Like a pianting, Well done.
Best wishes,
Achim

You brought very striking colors in this composition Bill. Indeed it looks like it could be anywhere in a temperate region. The vertical framing is appropriate as it brings out the beautiful layers. Well composed and exposed. Regards...Danilo

hello Bill
I am surprised to see such colours in your country!I wonder if it's the same in the jungles in automn! But in Malaysia, you have the favour to have trees which are always green ,and this is less sad than in my country, and you have often a splendid blue sky!In the part of France where I leave,in winter, from december(and even before)until april, the sky is grey and there is no leaves in the trees! So ,you can imagine how we look forward to see the summer!
On your photo, the colours are splendid, and it's very well composed, with the 3 different layers of colours, blue, green and red-orange-green!very nice!
Kind regards
Pascale

Hello Lau,
The colour really looks nice on land and the blue sky above! the best colour contrast indeed!
thank you for the wonderful useful and informative notes regarding the weather in Malaysia as well!
I loved this cheerful image of colour
many thanks

Hi Bill,
You had me going with this one thinking you had a sudden cold front.
Anyway very nice collection of bright colors seen below the blue sky presented in effective vertical format.
Very informative note about Malaysia tropical climate.

Ciao Bill,
nice shot,
in this photo see many things all together, the nature, the traffic and the antenna, but also a very beautiful cloud blue sky.
Giorgio

Olá Bill, I remember well this place and its humidity. Also, I like the name, since Kuching means cat and I love cats ;-) The sharpness doesn't seem to be the best here but you found a good combination of colors in this vertical composition. Even the naked trees in the background gives a nice graphic appeal, making the transition to the layers on the sky. Good work.

Hi Bill
Amazing palette of colours in this beautiful composition.
Well chosen the vertical format in order to show us the different layers of colours
Thanks for sharing and greetings

Hi Bill,

Hi Bill,

my friends who visited Malaysia some years ago told me about the extreme high temperatures...but you know we are used with that. I lived in Iguassu Falls for two years and it's not hard to reach 40 degrees C in the summer, however, not like in Malaysia, the winter is kind of cold. I like this colorful vertical shot. It trully reminds the colours of the autumn in the north hemisphere. Very beautiful, well done!
Regards,
Carlos

Hello Bill,

Vey good, very intersting, very impressive. A composition well balanced with successive plans well delimited by the colors. A good use of verticla format too. A good photowork.
Best regards of Belgium,

Bill Hi;

Splendid compositions of beautiful autumn colors all enhanced by the wonderful blue sky.
Thanks for the educational note, as always
Congratulations, very nicely presented

Bill,
Thanks for showing us the colorful scene, it does look like autumn. They are many trees that come in yellow and red. The stormy sky look tropical. With this big, you would have to be really steady and have good light otherwise you'll need a tripod. As you see here, the sharpness is not as good. However the overall scenery and mood is very well captured. Lovely colors. Thanks Bill.

Hi Bill,
Now, this is a surprise! An Autumn view in Malaysia! And a beautiful one! Maybe the sky looks too tropical for Autumn, but its very pretty. I like also those intriguing naked trees, which make the image even more interesting graphically.
I guess the less great sharpness is due to the heavy weight of the lenses and the long focal length.
Regards, José.

Hi Bill
Lovely composition with vivid colors and contrasts. A interesting combination with nature in foreground with cars in background. Good POV and framing. Regards, Consuelo

Hello Bill:

Although there is some saturation in the shade, especially in the red, the view is significant within the vertical.

There are areas lacking sharpness and definition, but in general it is nice composition.
