My previous post shows the end of this road leading to the jetty or ferry terminal. This one shows the road going up over the hill. As kids we used to hide our bicycles in the hill and hiked over this densely forested hill to the other side for a few days of camping, fishing, and swimming.

Batu Kawan is a small island in the state of Pulau Pinang. Few people live there. Most are plantation workers & their families. The palm oil fruits used to be "ferried" or pulled across a very narrow strait to the mainland by some kind of a pulley system using steel cables and pontoons. The pontoons could also take bicycles, people, and a vehicle or two. I don't know if they are still using this mode of transportation. It was still operational as recent as four or five years ago.

The island of Batu Kawan & its sleepy little town would soon lose its reputation as a quiet backwater. The photo here shows the infrastructure that is transforming the island. There is already a huge stadium here. When a soccer match was held recently there were many of kilometers of traffic jams to the stadium. To the embarrassment of the Chief Minister of Pulau Pinang, the elderly Sultan of Kedah had to walk some kilometers to the stadium to watch the game. I think he missed the first half. A bridge is already in place. You don't have to use the rickety & ancient pontoon to cross the island from the mainland anymore.

Two more mega projects are ongoing. This island will soon be linked to the island of Penang by a 26 kilometers bridge costing RM3 billion or close to a billion USA dollar. A new township is also taking shape here - the third satellite township after Bayan Baru and Seberang Jaya. That means a population explosion. Good for business & the real estate people. So there goes the hideaway place of my adolescent years!

Some history: In the 1800s stones from this island were shiped in junks to built George Town, the state capital on the island of Penang. Batu Kawan in the local language means "Frienly Stone". European planters used to own & manage sugar cane, coconut, rubber, and later oil palm plantations during the colonial period. My former camping spot was near the clubhouse the plantation owners built to meet & party. Little evidence of the clubhouse remains.

Beautiful colours and beautiful view.
Best regards, Bosko.

dude, this is something stunning. i mean you captured 'dramatic' in this shot. capturing such scene is somethimes 'boring' but for this shoot, it surely looks a bit different the the ussual style. i like seeing something different from you... oh,unfortunately no vehicles appeared in your shoot, it could add more sense if some traveling lights pass by your lens at such f-speed... tahniah kawan...

regards,
Frisco

I love sunsets and Malaysia is probably the place where I have seen the most beautiful sunsets in the past 20 years. I have a couple of Malaysia sunsets in my gallery. Here, the colours are fantastic and the composition very good. Well done.
Antonio

Excellent sky with a great diversity in colors, from cold to warm. The road in the foreground makes an gooddiagonal perspective and somehow benefit from a good light.

Hello Latiff
As I saw you love walking and travelling, here is a good shot showing your love, a way for somewhere, zig zag road, the sunset.
I love your composition good POV.
Chris

Hi latiff.

Tu as pu photographier un ciel incroyable. La lumière et les couleurs du ciel sont en parfaite opposition avec le premier plan de la route. Les montagnes à l'horizon font un beau contre-jour.
Jacques

The colors in the sky is great. Very good composition also.
