| Even girls as 9 years old become a "KAVADI" Devotees prepare for the celebration by cleansing themselves through prayer and fasting. On the day of the festival, devotees will shave their heads undertake a pilgrimage along a set route while engaging in various acts of devotion, notably carrying various types of kavadi (burdens). At its simplest this may entail carrying a pot of milk, but mortification of the flesh by piercing the skin, tongue or cheeks with vel skewers is also common. The most spectacular practice is the vel kavadi, essentially a portable altar up to two meters tall, decorated with peacock feathers and attached to the devotee through 108 vels pierced into the skin on the chest and back |

Hello Kiril,
You have a very interesting and intriguing portrait of the young girl going through her religious ritual. You can see from her expression that she is transfixed and in deep meditaion preparing for the ritual. This is a great emotional capture. I am at a loss why your photo has not received any attention so far. It may be that the two bolts confuse people as to its purpose. I feel that an explanation for people like me, who are not familiar with this ceremony, of why she is posed between the bolts would have clarified this usnsual position. This is a very good photo and very interesting for me to view and to ponder. Very unusual and thought provoking image in my opinion.
