When I reached Toungoo the military were, unbeknownst to me, conducting operations (I dread to think what) on the road to Loikaw, where I was going. Busses were cancelled. That didn't stop the enterprising ticket seller. Come back at 5pm he said, then 7pm, then 10pm, then 6am etc. Finally a bus came and after some discussion I was told to quickly get aboard, and as the bus was not a passenger bus there was a 50% discount on the price, no mention of the route it would take. Aye Win (centre) had a dried fish stall in the market in Loikaw and had chartered the bus to take fish she'd bought in Rangoon home. Imagine the smell, all the seats had been taken out and the entire bus + roof rack was loaded up with hessian bags of dried fish. Off we went, trundling through the country side having a merry time. Night came. Strange I thought, it didn't look that far on the map. I fell asleep on a bag of fish. Morning came, still driving. the detour had taken us about three times the distance, via Meiktila. Luckily my travelling companions were a good bunch so the trip didn't seem too long.

would have been nice to include all the the driver in the image, but the confined space didn't allow

Nice Image Steve & a bloody good story, well done, that was 12 years ago, I thought you were a bit on the nose the other day it must have been the fish, Only joking .
Thanks mate
Take care
Santo
Posting wise we are nearly neighbours again

Very nice picture. Daily life in Myanmar. Reminds me of my own adventuers there.

Hello Steve,
I've had some rough times when travelling in Asia and Africa, but this sounds a bit too much for me. I'm glad the days of very basic journeys are over for me.
In any case, it's a fine shot with remarkably good light for being inside a bus. Your fellow travellers seem to have been a merry crowd. I remember Burma from long ago as being one of the nicest countries imaginable. It's just so bad that they've got such a rotten dictatorship.
Regards,
Gert

Hi Stephen

Bus rides in Myanmar are eternally "interesting". The fish eye effect gives a very interesting composition but maybe makesthis a little soft?

Andy

I cannot get enough of these views, this is really a "travel photo", both informative for us and certainly a great remembrance for you even if (I guess) the journey was far from comfortable !

Having read the story : incredible tale ! And now I think I can even smell the fish... Fantastic life shot, hope to seeing many more of those !

TFS, I had a great time having a look at it !
Cath.

very nice picture ...would be even beter with the driver with face. Gives nice feel of confined space of the bus

I love the lense distortion in this one Steve, It matches the feel of this shot. Excellent scan job here.

Cheers

Kamran
