Photographer's Note

When I chose this image to upload today I was going to ask “guess what the white powder is” and then everyone would say “flour” (although some would probably say “cocaine”…) and then I would explain “no, you’re wrong, it’s cement”...

Unfortunately, I spoilt that opportunity with the title. But I think it’s the best title for the photo as these bowls of cement are for sale. You pay 100 rupee but you can’t take your bowl of cement with you. How unfair, you will think, until you realise that your 100 rupee is not a price but a donation to help maintain the Bodhnath stupa and preserve a centuries-old tradition.

I’m not even sure I’m using the correct word as, according to some sources, what you can see in the photo is make limestone (the substance used to create limewash) rather than cement.

In my last post I promised to show a ceremony I watched 5 days after the full moon festival. But I changed my mind… and today I’ll just post a couple of images taken a few hours earlier and ask “guess what the purpose of all this cement (or limestone) is”…
