Photographer's Note

This is a shot of two Buddhist stupas in the Sherpa village of Khunde in the Everest region of the Nepal Himalaya. Kwangde Ri looms behind, and you can see lamp posts surrounding the monuments. Ever since the influx of tourist trekkers and climbers once Nepal was opened to the outside world in the 1950's the standard of living has improved for some of the Sherpa community, many who now make the living servicing the needs of visitors. Electricity supplies, satelite dishes and better schooling have all become possible because of this tourist dollar. However you don't have to travel far from the touristy areas to find the abject poverty and subsistence farming that makes up the very hard life that most Nepali hill people experience day to day.
