Photographer's Note

Bhaktapur is one of the three cities with a Durbar (i.e. “Palace”) Square. I have posted numerous photos from the other two: Patan and Kathmandu. However, while revisiting Bhaktapur soon after the devastating earthquake of 2015, it was not the Palace Square I wanted to see first. It was the Nyatapola Temple.

Nyatapola (the word means “five storeys”) temple is the tallest pagoda in Nepal and its tiered roof is more than 30 metres high. Standing close to it and trying to look up makes you feel very small. And when you climb to the top, you can admire the distant, snow-covered peaks of the Himalaya.

It is one of the reasons why it’s truly special.

Another reason is - in April 2015 it was not from the news but from the note to this photo posted by Gert that I found out about the earthquake.

Some of you probably know what happened to Nyatapola in 2015 during the earthquake. Those who don’t – wait for my next upload as that is exactly what I’m planning to show.
