Photographer's Note

Apologies for the quite awful title here. And the composition is less than perfect with the horses looking away, but at 5000m+ and gasping for breath on a freezing morning, it was an achievement for me to grab the camera from my pack! The Yak or the Dzo (a Yak crossbreed) would be the usual pack animal of choice in these parts but the Thorung La Pass is simply too steep for stable passage with these beasts of burden. Consequently, few animals cross this pass on the Annapurna Circuit save for a few horses carrying those people suffering with the altitude and some basic supplies. Those that do stand in stark contrast to the bleak surroundings. The pass isn't particularly scenic but is a watershed (literally!) for anyone trekking this wonderful and varied trail.
