Photographer's Note

The imposing Tengboche Monastery, standing at 3,867 metres, is one of the most important centres of the Nepali strand of Buddhism. It sits in the predominantly Buddhist Khumbu region, home to the highest mountains in the world. In this concentrated area sit the hugely imposing Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and of course Everest (known as Sagamartha in Nepal and Chomolungma in Tibet). The surroundings are a wildlife haven owing to the Buddhist belief that taking away life is wrong. The monastery has had to be rebuit twice, first after an earthquake in 1934 and most recently following a devastating fire in 1989.
