Located at the heart of the ancient city Kathmandu, Hanuman-dhoka Durbar Square is a complex of beautiful temples and shrines, both Hindu and Buddhist. Most of them are built in the pagoda style embellished with intricately carved exteriors, built between the 12th and the 18th centuries.

Some scholars believe the stack-roofed pagoda found from China to Bali has its origins in the Kathmandu Valley. A 17th century visitor marvelled at "multi-storeyed temples so tall one would take them for a crown of clouds". Contructed of warm red brick and carved sal wood, temples are lavished with elaborate metal ornementation as intricate as jewellery. The beaten borders, the tinkling bells trimming the roof, and the banners streaming stiffly out, all combine to create an exuberant, yet deeply harmonious impression.

Wow, most impressive architecture in a superb composition, Vincent. In a way, the tree disturbs a bit the sillouette of the that triple roof, but it also adds a nice graphism on the sky. Fascinating place.

Hi Vincent,
Very good POV ... I like the overall rustic color of the image as it really show the age of these ancient buildings. What facinates me most is the intricate wood carving and designs ... it must have been a labour of love to painstakenly hand carve them individually ... oh well it is the house of their God afterall. Well composed and good overall image quality. Well done! tfs
Cheers,
Renier

On the one hand the overhanging tree in the background is a bit of a distraction, but on the other I like how it almost appears to be growing out of the pagoda roof. The similarity in colour reinforces this impression.
The architecture is stunning, and I like how you brought these four elements together in your composition; the three buildings and the tree.
Good work Vincent.

Cheers,
Ben

Being a Nepali, I was glad to see historic architecture in the form of picture from my home country.
Inneeded brighness, color and angle of the picture are superb. You have tried to picture everything from sky to wooden carved 'Tundals' and tiny bells.
The note is quite infomative.

Hello Vincent,
This old architecture is very interesting, also to study the influence from an to other countries in the region!
Well framed with great details!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Vincent,
A great point of view and good composition to get all three buildings in the shot. Excellent sharpness and details. The tree in the background fills up the space in the sky nicely. A wonderful and interesting image.

Wanda

Hi Vincent,
The Durbar square is ofcourse a photographer's delight, with all those beautifully carved woodden pagodas. I love the way the huge tree guards over the temple complex.

Bonsoir Vincent,

Magnifique! Merci.

Amicalement,
Angel.

A very good choice of upwards POV to enclose all these pagoda roofs in a very creative composition. The background tree, while possibly disturbing the lines of the pagoda on the right, does an excellent job of filling in the otherwise bland sky. Good work

Salut Vincent,
What a coincidence, you posting this one exactly when I am finishing the scanning my old photos of this place!
Those roofs are surely a fertile ground for gorgeous compos and you show it wonderfully here. Maybe the light isn't so interesting, but that enabled you having very fine detail in those carvings and textures.
I am going to be picky and I am not sure if my guess is right, but I always thought that Hanuman Dokha was the old Royal Palace and this temple the Taleju. Maybe both me and you are right, Taleju being part of the Hanuman Dokha...
Thank you for bringing me back good memories.
Amicalement, José.

Bonjour Vincent,
very nice architecture of old pagodas, fine composition and colours, interesting note. I like it. Well done photo.

Hi Vincent,
A famous place and a real good photo. The contrast between all red and brown colour tints are perfect composed. Even that tree really fitts in the overal composition...i like that.
Have a nice day, Henk

Bonjour Vincent,
Amicalement, Christian

Hi Vincent,
Wow, superb sharpness and details and nice colors. Nicely composed as well. I wish you a nice week. Best regards. Salvator.

Bonsoir Vincent,

Vera.

Hi Vincent.

The light was strange...maybe a little fog too? Anyway, great atmosphere.

My compliments!

Hi Vincent,
composition of this picture is very nice but what I realy like are stunning details in this architecture. Good light management in not so friendly sun conditions!

Stanislav

A very nice architectural shot from Nepal. At the first glance, it looks real like a chinese shrine. Very impressive shot. Well done.

Hello Vincent
As I had said before you do have a great idea to see shapes and angles in architecture. Lovely POV & framing for this one...I especially like the branches of the barren tree standing over the pagoda. Yes, we do see a distinct similarity of the merus of Bali temples & these pagodas..who knows from where it originated, as there would for sure, be multiple beliefs.

Angshu

Bonjour Vincent,

JB.

Hi Vincent - very clever angle, showing everything exotic and fascianting, and nothing of the touristy kitsch souvenir shops which I know are lying just below the bottom frame, I will probably go back there in october.
