[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
It was Maha Shivaratri, the night of Lord Shiva. There was more than 100,000 pilgrims and sadhus coming from all over Nepal as well as India in the temple of Pashupatinath in Kathmandu, which is considered as one of the holiest shrines of the Hindus, glorifying Shiva. Along the broad stone stairway leading up from the river, I spied a huge crowd. Hundreds of Nepali men and boys had gathered around a rough canvas pup tent, where a pot-bellied Shaivite was working them into a frenzy. When I arrived he was apparently meditating but clearly this was not the reason why there was so much excitement there.

I pressed into the mob, wincing with amazement as the penitent opened an eye, then another one, then went up and wrapped his dick on the wooden stick you can see on the picture above under his left arm. He started to twist it wildly around the stick like a rubber band and invited a spectator to climb onto his back and stand on the stick. The crowd cheered. Their feverish chants -- "Jai Nepal!" -- indicated that this seemed the zenith of manliness. Right then, a tree, on which more than twenty people had climbed, just broke and they all felt on the compact crowd very near where I was.

I wish I could have taken a picture of this crazy man performing, but when the action began the crowd got so excited that I just got pushed and crushed in all directions, losing all control over myself. A bit scary, I must admit.

Salut Vincent,
well captured moment of contemplation. For European eyes (at least for mine) a strange impression of him, well managed light here. The composition is well done and the flowers at right good to be kept.

Interesting exotic portrait in fine cool colours.
Detailed nore included.

Hi Vincent!

Everything in your picture is scary, as you mentioned when you describe the scene. And the way you captured it translates the almost surrealistic aspect of the happening very well. When I see pictures of that kind I always wonder what is really contemplation and religion and what is show or just a pretext for smoking and having fun...

Well seen, well done, a great picture with a very special atmosphere!

Kind regards
Markus

Salut Vincent,

You seem to have been there at an important time, Vince. This Sadhu, looks rather magnificent and impressive too. Much better that the regular Pashupatinath gang of holy guys , the we all know so well. he is nicely composed in a interesting and angular recess Nicely exposed too, and full of fascinating detail. regards kevin

Hello Vincent
A good portrait of the Naga sanyasi meditating. Ash covered just as Shiva was, your note after reading, does give a scary impression. The smoke in the FG also adds the scene. Well done!

Angshu

Bonjour Vincent

Amicalement.

Crazy and interesting story in the note. I like a lot the mood of this portrait, although it's a pitty the tight crop on the bottom. Nevertheless, a fascinating place and shot.

Salut Vincent,

Excellent compo and POV, very nice colours, and light.
Very good note.
Very well done my friend,
Filipe

Salut ,

Je suis paresseux écrire en Français... 8-(

Those guys have a natural (and trained?!) talent for posing, haven't they? But getting good portraits of them isn't so easy, namely because of the light and the people around them. As always, besides a great portrait, you managed to get a good POV/compo, showing him in context very nicely.

I would still praise the excellence of the exposure under those adverse light conditions even if I hadn't read the note.

Quite an experience, I imagine, hum!?

Amicalement, José.

PS: You know that I am kind of sad because I concluded definitively that I can't get any decent scan of the dozen photos I have with sadhus in Pashupatinath (at least until I get another scanner). I must confess that one year in TE also made me change my opinion about how good most of those photos really are. 8-)

Bonne réalisation.

Bonjour Vincent,
