Pilgrimage to Kalilvastu, the home of the Lord Buddha. Picture 8:
This pathway from the Royal Residence to the Eastern Gate follows the route of the ancient road. It was excavated by Dr P.C. Mukherji in 1898. The legend tells that, in the night Siddhartha awoke and stole out of the palace. He dared not take one last look at his sleeping wife and son, for fear that it would make him change his mind. We can imagine the young prince riding out in the light of the full moon towards the Eastern Gate and his date with his destiny. Today this path is called The Buddha’s Way. In the freshness and beauty of these meadows I can imagine the stories of the ease and sweetness of the Buddha’s early years. The legends tell of a forest of Sal trees , the Buddha himself, was said to have been born under one. Even today there are Sal trees here, and after 2600 years the area is still full of tranquility and spirituality.
