The Gang
Wandering through the streets of Kathmandu.
Saw some kids playing and had no idea what kind of game it was. I put my 20 rupees somewhere on the board and they rolled the dice in that red bucket....of course i lost and they had great fun in seeing that. Oh well, i ended up with a nice picture that cost me 20 rupees...not that bad after all.
Yes the light is hard and colourful...it's Fuji Velvia 50 if you wonder why.

Hahaha, great shot and story to go with it Henk. I bet they love preying on unsuspecting foreigners. I would have put down money as well though!

Yes, the lighting is a bit harsh, but not overly so. You actually managed it pretty well. Good inclusion of the board and the ringleader with the money, and bright red beads.

Regards,
David

good mood freezed in action
nice composition

Ha..ha..ha..what a funny and naughty face, they really posed for you Henk. I see the only girl on this picture, is she the boss of the gang :-)
Children will be children, i like to see their expressions, even on that kind of situation. Yes, the light a little bit too harsh but it still ok.
Thank you Henk

daniel

Hi Henk, at 2.5 rupees per head, sounds like you didn't do too bad. It's a great group shot, and not posed, you got them in action, fleacing the tourist. Those smiles sure look natural enough.

Thanks, John

Een foto naar mijn hart ..... Nepalese kids !!!

bonjour Henk, a lot enjoy here, a lot colors, i like all eyes to you, funny story also, thanks

Hi Henk!
I like the picture, it reminds me of similar scenes that happened to me in Laos, just I didn't have the reflex of trying to play with them! The smiles and the framing is really great, even more when you know how little time you get for it...

Cheers, Have a nice day!
-Pascal-

I take mostly nature/landscape images but do appreciate great human interest/culture photography.

Great capture of the moment. Well composed with every child's complete reacting face recorded. Nice.

Nice comments.

You do get around, don't you? :)

Hi Henk,
Judging by their expressions I'd say you've been ripped off, how do 20 rupees translate into our monetary unit, the 1DsMkIII ? ;-)
I don't mind the strong colors at all, we should know you well by now, I like the tight and exact framing having them well grouped around the board.
The one on the right looks real fun... C'mon mate, try another one ?
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

Hi Henk
One from the archives today? The positioning of the circle of children in the frame is very well done, and it's great that they are all looking at the camera so attentively. It looks like an interesting game; I would like to join in too!
Have a great day!! Regards, Susanna

Hi Henk,

the use of the flash provided you an excellent luminosity in the dark night. Colors well saturated and some nice highlight effects. I see one hand holding something that looks like a gun on the top of the image. I hope that's just a water-type one! Great velvia capture!

Carlos

hi henk
excellent streetshot, is these kids living in the street or are they only playing? they are very young for to play money, your tight framing on their happy faces show us A certain joy of living.
nice archive, i will maybe go back to nepal this summer .

kind regards
didier

Hi Henk,

Marie

Sounds like you paid for the picture:))
A fine shot Henk and nice scanning.
Harry

Hello Henk,
you captured a nice moment, with all those faces watching the camera.
Velvia was (is) a great film, and I strongly believe that no raw digital picture can compete with it.
For example, as I always use the automatic level adjustment of photoshop, I notice that the digital pictures always change after this operations, whereas the scanned slides stay more or less the same. I think this is an indication that levels are already correct with velvia, whereas are far from being ok with digital cameras.
Cheers Stefano

Hallo Henk. An interesting and worth seeing photo. A benefit for the eye. The composition is convincing, and the informative text exemplary. Outstanding. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Hola Henk,
Saludos,
Mirari.

If I am right about what i am seeing on top right hand side you did not had any other chance than betting the 20 rupees. However, it was an excellent moment of happiness so well captured. Their eyes tell all. Well done.
Antonio

It looks like you shot this at night with fill-in flash. I can be wrong, but it's what it looks like. I like the circular composition around the game. Colors are deep... That Velvia is really a pusher in terms of colors. :) I like it.

Mooie verhaal, trouwens.
Nog een hele fijne avond.
Fulvio.

Hello, Henk,
I LOVE kid shots and this is a fine one!! Impish looking little rascals. :)) They look as though they got great pleasure in taking you to the cleaners... I love all the different faces and expressions and I find the light and color excellent. This is a fun shot!! Thanks and warm regards,
Shelly

Great group shot! The expressions are what makes this special, with the faces being so alive. The positioning of the people is great too, being natural and frame filling at the same time. Wonderful work!

Henk,
Nice scene you caught here.
These eyes seem hypnothized by the camera.
Very nice,

Hello mijn vriend,
No questionning, Velvia it is !!!
I like the eyes of all these kids all looking at you and their smiles on their faces. Very good composition and mood, the circle that the children are forming is very well captured.
I only think that the color shows some artefacts certainly due to the scan ?
Have a nice evening.
Best regards, Christian

Bonsoir Henk
Bravo.
Xavier

Hi Henk,
very interesting scene and of some special beauty, more as it would have only because it is a capture of children. Maybe because some look a bit innocent others seems to be smart and they know who is to please (in that moment). Oh I read, John counted them and divided the amount, that is also funny.

When I first saw the pic I thought to myself, Henk used a flash! I honestly think this is the first time I have ever seen a pic from you with a flash. He is Human! All the kids look like they are having a good time and you did a great job of getting their attention for the photo. I can't believe they are gambling at such a young age though.

Have a great day,

Mel

Bonjour Henk

Groeten Gerrit

Delicious colorful group portrait, Henk. With your skills, you managed to present an image from 96, most problably with better quality than if it was taken today by me ;-) This looks like an illegal game, specially involving money, and your POV enhances that feeling even more, which is pretty cool. There's even a kid with a gun in the background that seems ready for some action ;-) A very enjoyable image, observing all the faces and diferent expressions.
All the best,
ricardo

hello henk
i don't know if the nepalese rupees are the same than indian rupees, but if yes,it was not too much for such a nice photo!I like the way you have framed the group with all the eyes looking to you,and the big smiles of the children. This is a picture full of joy!I like the strong colours given by the fuji velvia!Do you know if there is much difference with the fuji 64 asa, that I used with my old reflex,a long time ago?It has also disappeared!
Have a nice day.
Pascale

Hi Henk,

Very nice group portrait, very funny, with great facial expressions and strong colors. i like it. Congrats!

Greetings from Laos!

Een goede trade-off dunkt me, Henk. Mooi werk !
Fijn weekend,

was impossible not to lose :D ..they seams to know well the game :D...but you win by taking this great shot :) ..i love the expression in their eyes :)

Hola Henk.
You did a good PP with this scanned photo, maybe as you said the light is a bit harsh but otherwise your shot looks very good. Nice expression on the children's faces, they look very happy after you gave them some money. Good high POV. Well done. TFS.

Hello Henk,
very nice this snapshot of the roads of Kathmandu.I like this daily life reportage and the best of all this superb shot of this children gang.In vain the 20 rupees that you gave in order to play and to lose but you gained however this photograph. Informative your note too.

Have a nice weekend,Danos

Hi Henk
What a bunch of little urchins. They all look happy enough. Well composed with their faces filling the frame.
Ah Fuji Velvia. I enjoyed that film and will be posting some scanned slides in the near future.
Phil

Dag, Henk.

Hello Henk,
I have noticed that Velvia scans are very strongly colored, but I think here the effect is very nice, they seem natural enough to me...
I love the tight crop on these kids, the almost circle they are in and your high pov, makes us feel so near, and that's great. Good to see them having fun, lovely expressions each of them. I like this a lot. Good story too:-)

Have a great w-end.
Regards, Michèle

It's excellent how you have managed to fit the circle of faces into the frame. You even managed to get some activity too with the boy bottom right. Very colourful, bright and well exposed. We expect no less from you.

Hi Henk,
An amusing and vivid image. Amazing how you managed to catch all of them so well in a so well arranged compo where there is even some action. Everyone of them is looking to the camera except one and each one has a different expression. Only you to complain about the harsh light - I guess that to many of us that would be big problem, but if it was for you too, it's hard to notice it here.
Regards, José.

Henk,
I went already several times over your shots done at Nepal and even wrote some critiques for these shots posted ages ago. Well, nice to see that you still have high quality shots in your hard disk that you can deliver at different moments. the group around the game and all the faces starring into your camera makes this a very interactive and good framing.
Cheers, Peter

Hallo Henk,
...A nice story, and a nice portraits gallery, all having a different expression,my favorite is the one on the left with the green hood...seems to be the boss...
We can recognize the velvia style by the saturated colors...it gives a kind of old school mood, you know that there's software to gives films feeling...b&w grain or velvia strong colors appearance...for nostalgic,
have a nice week end,
vincent

Hello Henk,
I love your photo of these streetwise and savvy kids. These kids are smart and they are survivors. They also look like they are having fun interacting with you. Great job as usual! By the way, you were asking me about the D300 vs the D3. If I had the money I would have invested in the D3 (which has a full-framed sensor) and having the D300 as a backup (which is a DX format camera), but I am heavily invested in Nikon's DX lenses. I am frustrated with Nikon because I sold some of my favorite lenses, especially the fantastic 17-35mm F/2.8 zoom, to convert to the smaller DX format. Why didn't the camera manufactures create the full-framed sensors in the first place? Even though the D3 has the best high iso sensor of any camera (even iso 6400 is amazing) I felt that purchasing two D300 camera bodies for less then one D3 was a much wiser investment for me. It was nice hearing from you again.
Stan

So you joined them and played ! I like to look at the various friendly faces and all the details in the heart of the action, I think that there is a gun up there, hopefully in plastic and not loaded - to think that they are already playing for money !
Great models that you found !
TFS,
Cath.
