This picture shows an old Tamang woman outside her home in the Kathmandu valley.

The Tamang's are an ethnic group of people living mainly in the hills around the Kathmandu valley. They are of tibeto-burman origins, and are at the bottom of the nepali caste-system. Most of them work as porters, carrying heavy loads around by foot. This is still the most common form of transportation in Nepal, as there is virtually no infrastructure outside the major cities and tourist places.

Post processing:
I've ajusted the contrast and darkened the picture a little. I have also brightened the eyes a little to maintain their original illuminate quality.

Hello Soren,
first welcome to TE! You are starting with a very interesting two shots. This is a beautiful portrait in my eyes. You chose b/w although I can imagine the colors to be lovely and that is already a daring choice and comes out greatly. What a wonderful expression and eyes this woman has. What a life she must have had, that shines through. She takes good care of herself it seems, wearing some jewels. I really miss a little note telling us where it is and the context. I am sure many more Treakearthers would appreciate that.
