So now you know: the answer to the age old question "what do monks wear under their robes". I stole this picture at Pull Hardi Gompa, a magnificent mountain top temple of the Tibetan tradition (Mahayana). These monks were working to prepare for a coming religious festival by erecting marques. However, monks of the the other tradition (Theravada) do not wear shorts, because they did not exist at the time of the Buddha, and so, do not occur on the list of permitted possessions for a monk. The Mahayana sects are much more flexible in their interpretation. However, tucking you robes up and getting down to work in shorts seems to be the ideal solution to this situation.

Hello Kevin,

Thank you for this beautiful photograph and this excellent answer to this highly existential and metaphysical question.

I like this humour and at the same time this historical truth.

Amicalement
Marc

hi Kevin

A good explanation and revelation of monk's life and modern day style. Nice color contrast. Parallel lines of steel rods really make a good attraction to this photo.

tfs, bill

A funny and useful post. The title is perfect to make sense.
Well done.
Stéphane

Excellent TE-shot Kevin with a pleasant remark, same habit in the South, shorts as underware, so they all must look at these foreigners walking around in their underware:).
Captive moment, this man pointing out how to proceed.
greetings
Henk

Hi Kevin,
Hahaha!!! Who on earth is wondering what type of lingerie monks wear!!! A metaphysical question indeed! ;D A funny shot and subject here with interesting expressions and added graphism of the horizontal poles...
Greetings from Phnom Penh
