...I've always preferred pictures that tells a good story, rather than pictures of pretty sunsets or landscapes. The quality of this picture definitely leaves a lot to wish for, lacking both in sharpness and detail. However it’s still a personal favourite, because of the story behind.

The picture is taken during the “Indra Jatra festival" in Kathmandu. During this festival the Royal Kumari(a child goddess), is pulled around the central part of the old city in a huge flower-bedecked chariot, while thousands of people pay there respect to the living goddess.

Who is the Royal Kumari?(the ultra short version)
Kumari is believed to be the bodily incarnation of the goddess Durga. She is usually chosen
around the age of 3-5, and then carry out her spiritual duties until she reaches puberty and has her first menstruation. After that she looses her divine character, and a new Kumari is chosen.

Back to this picture! The girl passing by in the front (and out of focus) is actually the former Royal Kumari, Amita Shakya, fallen from grace. While thousands of people were waiting for the present Kumari to emerge, she was walking quietly and almost unnoticed by her former resident at the Royal Durbar Square. However the really wicked thing about this picture is the lady selling postcards in the background. The postcards are portraits of Amita Shakya back when she herself was the Royal Kumari - past and present united in one.

PP: automatic contrast-enhancement, automatic clarification, sharpness and framing.

That makes the story, really...
The past and the present, you are right.

Especially now (the future) when Kumari doesn't live in Palace any more, which almost means doesn't exist at all..

Soren: yes, I recognize this lady from Dhubar Square - strange how some things don't change. Interesting note. regards, c

Hi Soren,

Yes, the picture isn't a masterpiece, but the story behind it does make this a good upload. I like the personal touch here (instead of just copy and paste). Thanks for posting.

Benny
